In my new custom DIY viv (36x24x24) what size heatmat should I go for because it's hard to find one that is 12x12 which I thought would be the ideal size?

Habistat recommend a 23" x11" 28 watt mat for a viv between 36" x12" x12" and 48" x 12" x 12".

No, polystyrene is a good insulator - that's why they transport human organs in it

A layer of polystyrene then a layer of baconfoil to help reflect the heat back is ideal...

But surely the polystyrene will absorb just as much heat as the wood would do!

I think the heatmat is better smaller, then the snake has a big space he can go to get away from the heat if he needs to.

if its bigger then he has less space to cool off in and may get stressed.

the general rules is that heatmats cover 1/3rd of the floorspace, but it doesn't have to be EXACTLY a 1/3rd, not to nearest mm.

Btw; have you got a piece of lyno over the mat, taking it that the heatmats IN the viv?
