even if you were to feed OFF the sand, the corn would still get sand in its mouth and swallow it - it would also get in the nostrils too and possibly cause respitory problems.

They wouldnt have impaction problems if they wernt fed on it (though im sure it would end up in the snakes mouth at some point), but sand is also abrasive and gets into nostrils, water bowl etc.

Ive heard about gut problems but would they still have that problem if they weren't fed on it? I.e fed in a tub and unable to digest the sand in the first place.

I've seen this on the hognose, someone had a glass cooking dish filled with sand.

This is probably because Hoggie's come from sandy places and are adapted.

Corns aren't from sandy area's so not good for them..

hoggies are fine on sand so is a sand boa but its there natural habbitat.

Indeed, and corns aren't living in sandy area's so it should not be used

Oh right! I learn something new every day!! Thanks Matty!

Paula, its not the dust thats the problem, small mammal shavings contain pine which is toxic to reptiles.
devilsmistress Posted - 27/07/2009 : 10:29:45
I have never seen it mentioned but I wouls assume Wood shaveings (the stuff for hamsters ect is a big no no to because of the dust? My mate was gonna put some of his daughters hamster bedding in when he gets his snake! I nearly killed him! Told him to use the stuff he used for his python!

Big NO-NO, Even though it says on the pack, siutable for snakes, this can cause a real problem with impaction of the gut, which can lead to serious complications and even death.
Much better to use aspen, beech chips or auboise(hemp), IMO.
