I've been a little worried about Henry. He was quiet and in blue for a while. Then I noticed him moving about a bit in his hide, but not coming out so I assumed (correctly as it happens) that he was readying himself for the imminent shed. Well tonight I decided to place a piece of cork bark in with his other furniture, hoping it would help him get his skin off. Sure enough within a minute of the bark going in he was over and it a shedding for his life's worth! Now he's all shiny and the skin came off in one lovely piece! Yay for Henry! |

If there is only a barely noticeable lump then he's probably ready to move up to large mice. If you can try to pick over the mice when you buy them you can choose the smallest large mice. It's amazing how big a prey item they can eat, just make sure that it isn't more than 1.5 times the widest part of his body.
At 289g he's got a long way to go to catch up with my males that are around the 800g mark  .

A barely noticeable lump. I'm just wondering if the mid sized mice are enough for him. He's pretty big, 4.5 ft. I'll weigh him in a bit and get back to you with his weight, as he's out and about at the moment.
EDIT - He's 289gms. I wish I'd weighed him when I first got him, but I know his backbone was still showing then, too. |

If you can still feel his backbone then there's no worries about him getting fat . When he eats is there a 'bump'?

He's eating mid sized mice and he was being fed once a week on a Saturday, but the day's changed to Fridays as that was the first day I got him to feed. I'll get back to you regarding weight, as I fed him on Friday night, but I'll check to see if he's had a BM and will weigh him tomorrow. But I can feel his backbone, not hugely so, but it's noticeable. |

I'm so glad he are for you and even did it in style . It's always a relief to get that first feed out of the way. As he's an adult he doesn't need food to grow, just to maintain him. What are you feeding him and how often? What does he weigh?

Thank you! It was a wonderful to watch and he did it all in the space of about five minutes. Last night I finally fed him his first mouse since I got him and he was clearly hungry! A very nice strike and swallow. Now he's all curled up in his hide letting his dinner go down! When I got him he was a little underweight, so I'm hoping he'll gain a few grams, which I'm monitoring closely. Obviously I don't want him to become fat! |

I'm so glad that Henry did a virtually clean shed and that you got to see it Jacquie . You're lucky, a lot of members have had snakes for years and haven't managed to see them shed yet! Well done for putting the bark in to help him.

This is Henry's shed. Apart from the tail tip, which came off separately, he got rid of it all in one easy go. Eye caps and all! He's got a new lease of life now that he's shed, and I did lose him for a bit, but I found him down behind my pile of cushions on the floor! |
