Hi all
Sorry if this has been flagged before but I spotted it while cleaning Willow today and wanted all to see this.
I was cleaning her vines (reptile specific artificial greenery) and I found a very sharp piece of metal sticking out of this reptile specific piece of kit.
Being alarmed I check her other piece of greenery. I thought it must be a one off and the other vine in her viv was of a different manufacturer. So what did I find...
More sharp metal
At this I went to look at the vines in Juniper's and Oak's fauns, in the hope it was a coincidence.... but it was not.
and
not as obvious as the shot is blurred but still there.
It seems to be a fault in all the reptile vines, I wont name names as its not the policy of this forum and there is more than one manufacturer at fault. The metal that is exposed is razor sharp and could cut your snake.
I have used files to blunten the metal but all should check.
Again sorry if this has been flagged before.

Lupi lou, I know, I replied to that thread on dark side ( yes, I admit I'm a member on there, too :-0 - mainly for the classifieds, though :-) ) - I almost put a link on here to that thread, as I thought it was pretty useful. Just wasn't sure if we are allowed to.
It's a shame, that even the large reptile product companies haven't realized that's quite a risk ...and have you ever checked the aquarium ornaments? They are even sharper, surely the fish could ( and probably do ) tear their fins on those. |

Im so glad I read this thread, setting up a new vivarium, checked my plants which are ok made of plastic no metal, medium hides exo terra are also good to go no sharp edges but the large hide I got had many sharp edges and sharp spikes on the inside of it.
Lots of sandpaper later and a sore arm its now smooth and ready to use, I figured to use it half on and half off the matt with a medium on the matt and a medium in the cold end, plenty places for the little one to regulate heat and hide.
Thanks for the heads up as stated I assumed they would be safe! never again will I take reptile products for granted as the say though never assume it makes an "ass" out of "u" and "me"  |

So glad you posted this Ben. We all assume that the equipment/accessories we buy for our snakes that are manufactured for reptiles are safe and you've highlighted the fact that that we need to be vigilant. It's a relief you spotted this before any of your snakes were hurt and I'll be checking all my vivs.

Thats a goood point Razee, I always check any hides I buy for this reason. The was a thread on the dakside on the hides and sharp bits. Again a bit poor when you consider the price of them and that they are for animals |

I did see this in a shop, needles to say, I didn't buy the type of plant.
It's also worth noting, that many resin hides tend to have very sharp bits on them, especially on the roof, and also around the edges. I spend ages choosing mine, and often still have to sandpaper some bits. I actually cut my finger once on a new hide.
It might be worth checking for that as well.... |

That is so bad, and even if it has been posted, i dont remember seeing it, that could end up being really nasty.
