Heya Guys.
I have a quick question regarding mat stat probes. Now over the last few days I've had an issue: Basically my corns keep burrowing under the aspen, which in itself is fine, But they keep moving the probe for the mat stat and thermometer. My stat probe and thermometer probes just rest under the substrate, and are not fixed in place. This has never been an issue until recently. The fact they move the probe makes the stat click on and off at the wrong temps, I don't want to use tape to keep them in place.
I was thinking of placing a sheet of newspaper over the probes below the aspen to at least keep them more in place than now, but have visions of the snake going under that also :D
All suggestions welcome.

I have my probes held together with elastic bands and then stuck down to my mats with white tack and a small amount of aspen over the top of them and I don't seem to have a problem |

Don't worry about pestering us with questions Tony, it's what we're here for and it shows what a caring and concerned owner you are  . Your questions have really been answered in both your threads but I will make a couple of points.
I've had the same issue as you with my snakes moving the probes, I came in and saw that Kellog's temp was about 31oC. Immediately checked his viv and found he'd moved the stat probe so that it was pointing upwards, reading the ambient temp and not the heatmat temp. I'm just lucky that I saw it when I did before there was an issue. I now weigh all my probes down with stones/rocks and it works well. I would advise against using the hide to weigh them down because when the snake goes in it, it then effects the temperature that the probes are reading.
You can use silicone or something like that and this thread explains how - http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=10789 I do cover my heatmats, with vinyl slate, but that's personal choice and not necessary. As long as the heatmat is run off a thermostat and monitored by a digital thermometer there is no reason for it to get hot enough to burn your corn , even when it lies directly on it.
Gmac dealt with the issue of thermal blocking on your other thread, with it being more of an issue with heavier bodied snakes than with corns. My feeling is that it must also be an issue if you have the mat under the viv and Silverwings' pics shows the dangers.
I'm glad you're moving the heatmat inside and please don't hesitate to ask for more help if you need it.

Thanks, I'll do that tomorrow :)
I feel like parent, My snakes and my Pooch all seem to get things before I do :)
And with been relatively new to snakes, I'll probably pester you all to death until I have it perfect :) |

I read several bits and pieces about placing of heat mats, My temps are fine with the mat under the tank (or so they seem with the stat and probe).
I read so much about thermal hotspots and stuff. I know wood is a poor heat conductor, I just figured it was safer under there. Though Im probably wrong :) |

My heat mat is under the wood not in the tank :) Ill try using the hide and see how that works :) |

I use cable ties to hold the mat stat probe wire to the heat mat and temp probe then place either a hide or some bogwood on top. |
