Hi all,
I could really do with some reassurance about my heat mat and thermostat positioning for my little corn snake Omar. The mat covers about one third of the faun and I put a thermostat on it yesterday as I was worried about it overheating having read the good advice on here. I have put the probe for the stat flat on the floor of the faun, under the substrate - is this correct? Also, what temperature should I set the stat at for the warm end? I was thinking 88 degrees or is that too warm?

So many questions!

Some thermostats can be 1+\- I always set to 29 in the cold weather to insure it reaches 27-28 if it goes over I turn them down a degree and as for the hot weather only ever turn them on at night when the ambient temp drops

Thank-you! It suits him. He is named after my favourite character in The Wire!

Definitely off to get a digi-thermometer today. Great advice - thank-you very much.

The mat should cover 1/3 to 1/2 of the floor, 2/3 is to much. As Scary says though, you need to have a digi thermometer probe on the floor under the substrate over the mat to set the thermostat by. For a faun the stat probe can either be on the floor of the faun at the same place as the thermomtere probe, or it can simply be attached to the mat outside the faun with tape (NEVER use tape inside a faun/viv) assuming the mat is big and sticks out a bit. This is actually slightly safer as it means there is no way the snake can move the stat probe.

Always best :)

Thank-you! Going to get a digi-thermometer today to put my mind at rest.

Mat should be 1/3rds - 1/2 the length of the home (i believe) and the stat should be set to average 28 degrees C on the hot end, prob should be placed over the heat mat in the home.
Stats art always reliable so alwasys use a digi thermometer to keep an eye on heat.
An example being that my stat is set to 25 degrees but the digi temp reads up to 29!
