Posted - 05/04/2013 : 20:07:09 Hello looking for some advice please. I have a 9 month old cold he is just under 2 ft but thin. He is housed In a 2 ft x 1 ft Viv heated with a heat mat. Hot end 28 -29 cold end around 22. Lot of hides and plants he has been in this vib ever since I got him at 2 months old. He doesn't seem to come out of hiding much in fact the only time we really see him is when we get him out for feeding and handling. Eats and poo fine by the way. If we do catch him out and about as soon as he see us he hides away again. I know he comes out at night because the aspen has tunnels in it. Just thinking as he not out and about much will I ever need a bigger viv? I was thinking of getting the large viva but now not sure its worth it? Also when he gets to adult size will we see him out and about more all will he always hide away? Any thing I can do to build his confidence? Cheers

Posted - 07/04/2013 : 09:29:48 Sounds perfectly normal to me. I've got some snakes that are always out on show but some I hardly ever see. Some are just more shy and secretive than others, a bit like us humans really. |

Thxs for all the feedback. He def not tent shape just thin. Do they grow long first then get the girth after? Like I say he grown alot more since moved to fluffs and how's he on smalls I guess he will grow even more :) I would like yo see him gain more confidence but I guess that will all come in good time. Cheers
His behaviour is totally normal Alib . Corns are naturally secretive and will hide during the day but come out to play when you are tucked up in bed, fast asleep . I only see mine when I handle or feed them, except during this time of year when all they want is a mate, so are out and about roaming their vivs and refusing to eat . Some corns are different and do come out during the day, but it doesn't mean that anything is wrong because he doesn't. It may change as he gets older, but if not it isn't an issue.
From what I've heard snakes do grow a lot more once you get them onto 'real' food, rather than pinkies and fluffs....so hopefully you'll notice a difference as you move him up. It may be that he will always remain thin, as has been said all snakes differ. One of mine is so thin that she'd never be able to take the bigger size medium mice, let alone large ones, and she's an adult. But she's healthy, eats, drinks and poos, so I know there's nothing wrong....and it sounds like that's the case with your snake. One point, do you keep a record of his weight? It is a good idea to, so you can keep an eye on his weight gain and see if there are any issues.
As far as moving him into a larger viv is concerned, that will be necessary once his length equals the length plus width of the viv he's in at the moment. Hope that helps.

Luke - is this the thread you were thinking of?

alib - I wouldn't worry too much about his size, as long as he isn't tent shaped as mentioned. My girl is very slender, but I know she is just going to be a slim girl. A lot of the very knowledgeable forum members put my mind at rest saying that as long as they eat and poo properly, everything is fine |

Your set-up sounds good to me, but I am a bit of a newbie! By thin do you mean underweight or just cornsnake-skinny? My corn is nearly a year old and about 2.5ft long. He used to hide all the time, but seems to be out and about much more now. I'm moving him into a big viv asap, about 3ftx2ftx2ft, but i'm going to pack it out with plants and hides. From what i've read you should house them in something that the length and depth of is the same as the snake. I'm hoping this new viv will do mine for life.
I think mine has gradually got more confident, he doesn't just hide when I come in to the room now, but used to. I think it helps that he is in my bedroom so i'm in there all the time, particularly in the evening when he wants to be out and about, and he must be well used to my smell too |
