Just reading through some topics and picked up on feeding with tongs, is this something we should be doing, is it better to feed this way than laying the mouse in the viv? All replies welcome as new to keeping our lovely Diego

I've only had Phoenix for 4 weeks and as he's young i did leave the food outside for him to just eat but in the last 2 feeds he's already learned to eat from the tongs and strike. So there isn't really any right way to feed your snake, it just depends how your snake likes to eat its dinner

Thank you all for your helpful replies. He has been feeding well so will carry on as normal but use kitchen roll.

As you've gathered Susan, there is no right or wrong way. A lot of it has to do with what your snake likes....some will only eat if the prey is left in their viv, others are happy to be fed outside their vivs, some like it to be dangled so they can strike and others prefer it laid out in front of them....and going by my corns it can differ between feeds !!

I do echo what Scottishbluebird has said. Personally, if I was feeding inside the viv, I'd put something like kitchen roll or newspaper down, covering the substrate, just to make sure my snake doesn't swallow any. Lots of snake owners don't do that, but I know I'd worry about it, so it would be more for my sake than the snake's .

You can try to feed with tongs if you want, see what reaction you get....just don't be surprised if either the mouse is ignored or you have a snake suddenly striking and making you jump ! If Diego doesn't take it from the tongs then you can just lay it down as normal.

Xxx

I use tongs because some of my corns strike feed and like herriotfan, I don't want them to miss and get me It depends on the snake though, I have to gently lay it in front of Aphrodite or she won't eat it.

If you feed in viv, safer to put down kitchen roll so dont injest aspen

Most of my snakes strike feed so I use tongs rather than having them get my fingers!

either way is fine, just down to however you want to feed your corn. I feed both ways as some will only take of left in viv.
