A lot of us on here feed in a seperate rub because we don't want our snakes to associate their vivs with feeding. Others will say it makes no difference to the snake so it's a personal thing. I feed in an seperate rub because I don't want my snake ingesting any substrate and to prevent them getting viv defensive if it were going to happen! Don't worry too much about being bitten. It really won't hurt, you'll hardly notice if it happens. |

Posted - 28/02/2013 : 08:07:12 I was exactly like you, I had my first hatchie straight on aspen, but my second on kitchen roll first - and that was better. I found out my first hatchie was very nervous, and I had to do her first several feeds in her faun, to stop her stressing. Which meant I was stressing, as she often managed to roll the pinkie in aspen. I also couldn't find the poop once or twice, which meant I panicked, that she was now blocked with aspen, and gave her an unnecessary bath ( which really stressed her out ). With my second hatchie, I had him on kitchen towel first, saw all the poops immediately, and did his first two feeds in his little tub, no probs, no stressing him out, no aspen. After I knew his pooping habits, I gave him a bit of aspen in one corner first, then gradually gave him more, and started taking him out for feeds, and that worked well. Interestingly, I found out he was much tamer on just kitchen roll. He never thought about trying to escape, when I picked him up, but once I added aspen, and he created secret escape tunnels in it ( from one hide to another ), he became shyer, and used his tunnels, if he didn't want to be picked up! Just some food for thought... :-) |

Posted - 27/02/2013 : 20:00:37 All good but you'll need some pinkies!!! I use kitchen roll for hatchies in their fauns for 2 main reasons.... 1)It means you can easily change any little messes, and see them easier. 2)If you feed your snake in his/her faun there's no chance of ingesting aspen. Once you get all your gear then get it all setup and running for a week or so to make sure all is going as it should prior to housing the snake. That way if there are any housing issues we can help you sort them out without stressing out your wee hatchie. |
