Hello!! Im sophie and i have decided that i want to purchase my first ever snake in the next month or so!
i have never wanted one until recently. My hubby has always wanted one (not corn) so i thought if i can research it properly and find a breed im comfortable with then maybe eventually we might progress.
I am having a bit of a problem already. Im very picky about what corn i want. Im in love with the lavender corns as purple is my favorite colour. I have no real idea where to buy from, how much to expect or how old my first corn should be!
I have been looking at starter tanks and the 101 set up and think i have most of the basics on the shopping list.
Im fully comfortable in feeding frozen (havent really read up on that bit yet mind)
I would very much appreciate any sort of advice, guidance or links?
Thanks in advance!
Sophie (being naughty using a work computer. have now filled the internet history up with snake related info!)

Hell no he's in the dog house. I can use this to annoy him ;)

Weeellll... just allow hubby to get his snake first while you decide what you want for YOUR snake lol :D

After spending hours looking at snakes im very much taken by Brazilian rainbow boas lol. Damn the hubby might win this one! I notice there is a sister site for boas so i think i will sign up on that one and lurk and learn as much as possible :D

Ha ha ha ha, great that you enjoyed the open day, and I'm glad you are successfully converted from not wanting snakes to wanting them lol!

Royal pythons are one of very few snakes I admit I'm not so keen on - I love their faces and their patterns and they are very cute as youngsters, but just not their short, stumpy adult bodies I'm afraid lol.

You get lots of good advice here :-)
One thing you definitely won't get, though, is people discouraging you from buying more snakes... I wouldn't mind a royal, and a hoggie ( and possibly others, like boas ) as well. Baby royals are very, very cute.

Oh my goodness! Just got back from the open day and held a few different snakes. Kinda fell in love with the little ball python mind!

Advice was the main reason for joining.
Yes razee that's part the reason I might not go. I don't think I have enough money to justify buying one this month and I know what will happen! I'll go and find one I love: -/

Hello Beenie and welcome to the forum. I can see the addiction is hitting you already, and that's even without having your snake yet! :-)

I have a feeling, that if you do cancel your plans, and go to the open day, you might end up coming back as a snake owner... beware. ( BUT go , anyway ).
smart bunny Posted - 22/02/2013 : 13:36:25
Well... we'd probably only have a couple of corns if it wasn't for this forum lol! (And they'd probably have died from being too hot due to bad advice...) Soo... depends on your perspective lol!!
Beenie Posted - 22/02/2013 : 13:06:29
Bwhahaha!! Am I going to regret joining this forum ; )
smart bunny Posted - 22/02/2013 : 12:19:38
It's very important that you...

get both lol!!

Corns are just that little bit easier as a 'starter' snake due to the humidity requirements of rainbow boas... of course then I can start talking you into getting a hognose... *whistles*

Beenie Posted - 22/02/2013 : 12:14:40
Maybe I'm getting carried away haha! It's all I can think about at the moment yet I've never even held a snake! It's nice to talk to people who own them though as non of our friends own or have owned snakes so it's a completely new adventure

Always good to start with a corn then work your way up lol cant fault corns love em to bits totally addicted and a Rainbows at the very top of my wishlist theyve really come down in price too can get them for under £100 now but i think i want a dwarf boa or a bci more than anything atm lol
Beenie Posted - 22/02/2013 : 12:01:18
Hmmm. Seems I now have a lot to think about regarding whether to get a corn or just get a boa now lol! I love the colours and ways they change in corns but as I have just discovered snakes properly they are all so beautiful. I'm thinking about cancelling my plans and going to the open day tomorrow to have a peek but I don't want to look like an idiot. Haha!
smart bunny Posted - 22/02/2013 : 11:44:46
A rainbow!!! Yeeeesss go for it, they are beautiful! See Prism in my sig - she is a Colombian rather than a Brazilian which I expect is what your hubby wants - and although they grow a bit fatter they don't grow as long as corns - In fact there are at least 2 members on here I can think of trying to talk their husbands into allowing them a rainbow at the moment lol! Prism is sooo much friendlier than the corns, who seem to spend most of their time trying to get away lol, she'll just curl around your arm and sit there quite happily rather than darting up the nearest sleeve.

So you just need to choose yourself your perfect corn, then let hubby get his rainbow lol!

Welcome to the forum As Isoldael says, young snakes do change colour quite a bit. If you have a look at 'Falco' in my signature pic, he's a lavender and much lighter than when they are hatchlings. He's more pale pink than purple.
Isoldael Posted - 22/02/2013 : 11:12:08
Welcome! :) Just a general warning when picking young snakes - they tend to change quite a bit in appearance over the years :) Good luck!

I'm dying to know though - what does your husband want? I'm guessing a royal? Or is he after a boa?
