Posted - 20/01/2013 : 20:31:48 Sorry, not strictly speaking a corn question but there are so many knowledgeable people here and there are bound to be some corn owners who have glass vivs lol!!
I was just wondering, what is the best thing to do with heat mats and glass vivs - mat inside or outside? We have wooden vivs for our corns but we are getting a glass one for our CRB. At her current size she would be better with a mat than heat lamp due to the humidity required.
Thanks for any replies |

Posted - 03/02/2013 : 07:37:07 Fortunately mine is an exo terra so it has purpose built holes at the top for wires to pass through if that's what you mean. then I have elastic banded my stat and thermometr probes, the latter of which has a rubber suction cup so I use that to hold them in place. Or as Georgina says, hot glue gun - I need to get myself one of those lol! |

Posted - 02/02/2013 : 11:32:29 I have a mesh lid on my tank, so there is a hole cut into it in the corner and threaded through. I have a gecko in mine so is suitable really. |

Posted - 25/01/2013 : 11:51:21 Well, got the viv all set up yesterday, bit tricky on my own as it's a little heavy, but got the mat on the bottom etc with some polystyrene under the mat. Set up decs in viv etc, turned it all on and waited to adjust the thermostat as necessary. Nothing happened. Left on for hours, still no warmer, arrrgh, got a dodgy mat or thermostat!! Turned off overnight then this am plugged mat in direct to mains.... left 20 mins and still no warmer. . . . . . . . Checked mat cable to find plug waving about behind the cupboard viv is sitting on... unplugged printer from mains, plugged MAT into mains, and it started heating up nicely, doh lol!!! |

Posted - 24/01/2013 : 16:13:15 You need special drill bits to go through glass, and plenty of water to stop the whole piece of glass cracking or shattering.
Plissken is now in a VX48, and this tank is now sitting in the shed (the usable space is 48"x15"x15")... |

Posted - 24/01/2013 : 11:38:17 Wow, that is one smart looking setup Dan! No way I'm gonna start drilling my new exoterra terrarium though rofl! |

Posted - 24/01/2013 : 10:41:49 I used to have Plissken in a 4ft glass tank, and had the mat inside the tank.
But at the time, I worked building aquariums, and built my tank with a hole drilled through the glass at the back...
Cork tiles are also good to glue to the outside of the tank to help with insulation.

Posted - 23/01/2013 : 19:55:12 hi you can get polystyrene from B&Q on a roll it will be with the wallpaper but i would glue it to some plywood as it a bit thin. |

Posted - 21/01/2013 : 17:31:12 When we got Ruby the tank she came with was a glass one, and the mat was underneath with polystyrene under. It was cut to fit in perfectly so you don't/can't see it's there :) my gecko is in it now and she hasn't complained lol. |

Posted - 21/01/2013 : 16:49:11 Instead of polystyrene I used cork tyles. More expensive but looks nicer. I also covered the bottom of the heat mat with silver foil to reflect more of the heat up. Works well. |

Posted - 20/01/2013 : 21:36:31 Any aquarium/ fish shops sell polystyrene tiles, to go under the fish tanks. I have used both polystyrene tile, and before that, a normal wall tile. The polystyrene reflects more heat into the tank, I found. |

Posted - 20/01/2013 : 21:35:58 My heat mats stuck to the underside of my exo terra vivs (on the outside) and then the whole thing stood on a spare ceramic floor tile to protect my wooden unit from the heat mat.
@ jenjen23, not sure if you can still get polystyrene ceiling tiles (fire regulations) but those are what I have used in the past to sit fish tanks on. You could probably get polstyrene sheets specifically for fish tanks from an aquatic/pet shop. Hope this is of help. |

Posted - 20/01/2013 : 21:00:38 Just to invade the topic, where do you get polystyrene sheets from? they have massive ones in b&q but don't need one that big, and a bit difficult to transport without a car! Thanks |
