i know i have to fix the heat mat to the bottom of the viv with stat but do i just place the substrate thin on top or cover the heat mat so snakey can't come into direct contact with the heat mat.
cheers guys

I have a very thin layer of aspen over the heat mat. My snake does move the aspen around in her warm hide and lays directly on the mat (has a stat controlling heat so no issues)

On the cool side the aspen is much thicker and my snake likes to burrow into it.

thankyou i've only kept big snakes before pythons / boa's on ceramics from above heating! this will be my first heat mat and stat setup in a viv.

just will a thin layer will do. as long as your mat is at the right temp it doesn't matter if your snake comes in direct contact with it.
