Hello all, me and my wife have just taken on our first snake. He's a gorgeous 12 week old normal corn. I found this site invaluable when setting up his home and it seems to have paid off. He's very calm, extremely healthy looking and more importantly he had his first feed with us yesterday, 2 pinkies, and he wolfed them down in about two minutes flat.
There is however one factor that im not completely sure about. Searched high and low for some info on this but could'nt find any.
So, we live in the UK and the winter can be quite harsh. Our flat isn't the warmest of buildings. I have a thermometer in the warm end of pedros faun, on top of the substrate and its looking just fine at about 83 degrees, however the thermometer in the cool end says 65 degrees, below the recommended temp, and the winter is set to get a lot colder yet!!! Also we cannot afford to keep the heating on 24/7 to bump the ambient temp up. An hour a day is fine but after four hours the flat's freezing again.
As I said, pedro looks absulutely fine, he is using both areas for thermoregulation. Am i worrying over nothing or should i take action? Iv thought about adding a light but cannot find anything suited to a faunarium.
Any help much appreciated, will have him out and about on staurday night so will get some pictures to post, Cheers! |

Snakes are quite good at regulating their temperatures when they have the option, just make sure your snake has somewhere to hide between the hot and cold end so that they aren't forced to choose between hot and very cold  |

Aye, just make sure he has an extra hide somewhere halfway in the tank where the temp is what the cold end ideally should be :) |

Ace, thought it wouldn't be too much of a problem. Im guessing in the wild they have to hide away from some pretty low temperatures and at least Pedro's got his garaunteed warm spot to retreat to. Thanks. |

The temp and stat prob should be on the surface that touches the get mat. As it will be hotter under the substrate as mats heat what they are directly in contact with. There's not a great deal you can do for the cold end, pop son polystyrene under so the heat from the mat holds better. For my hoggie h have a normal house clip in lamp in a dimmer stat keeping his temps up aswel as his mat. Asking as he's eating and pooing he should be fine x |
