Posted - 25/09/2012 : 17:29:38 Hi,
I'm getting mice from the breeding unit at my Uni so I only know what age the mice are, not what 'size' they would be classed as, i.e. fuzzie. I think Basil needs to be moved on from pinkies, this is what I have now, it is 10 days old, I am a little worried that it is going to be far to big for him! The pinkies I had were 5 days old I think, and they were leaving no bump at all and only taking him about 30 seconds to eat. What will happen if it is too big for him?
Thanks! |

Posted - 27/09/2012 : 11:31:00 Yeah, I remember when we moved Corny up from pinkies to fuzzies. I was really worried for him & couldn't watch! Scared it would get stuck! He was fine tho, still is a good eater.

Scary, isn't it? Mine get stuck on the pelvis.
Re breathing - they have a "reinforced " windpipe, so the mouse can't squash it on the way down, and they can push the end of the windpipe out of the corner of their mouth and still breathe, whilst they are eating.
I've watched mine closely, but never seen them doing this...so maybe they don't need to?

Posted - 26/09/2012 : 16:05:49 I find that mice come in reliable weights:
Pinkies are <3g Fuzzies(fluffs) are 5g +/- 1g Hoppers (smalls) are 9g +/- 2g
Neither of my boys are eating anything larger so I don't have weight ranges for them yet although I'm planning to move both of them up a size very soon.

Posted - 26/09/2012 : 15:46:45 Thanks everyone, I was so nervous, once he had his mouth around the head it seemed to take ages for him to get past the shoulders, how do they breath when they have a mouth full of mouse?! I don't know how I would get on without all the advice from here! |

Thank you. He's been having 3 fuzzies for the last 6 weeks so I'm sure he'll be fine He was 76g last week when I weighed him |

Posted - 25/09/2012 : 18:08:26 It looks like a fluff to me. Have you weighed it? As paulie said, as long as it isn't over 1.5 times the width of your snake it should be okay. If it is too big, he may refuse to eat it or he may eat it an regurge later on. |

Posted - 25/09/2012 : 17:40:29 If its too big for him he likely wont eat it but a good rule of thumbs to offr mice 1 and a half times the thickest part of the snakes body as long as you dont go over that it should be fine |
