I've bought Oscar a new viv.
I think the jump up in size is too much for him straight away, so today have built a partition. My next step will be to buy some aquarium backing (I've taken the back decor out for now as it would be too hard to build the partition with it in) and lots of new plants etc for him.
My main question is - is my current heat mat big enough for the new space? I will of course be buying a new heat mat (and a heat lamp) for the fully open viv, but wondered if I need something now?

Given his size, how long do you think he should stay in the partitioned space before moving to the whole viv?

Don't bother with putting in that exo terra background! Leave it behind the tank. Such a pain in the ass! My pair used to just sit behind theirs all day and never come out lol |

I would wait until he's shed. At least then he'll be able to see properly while getting used to his new home  |

I was going to move Oscar to his new set up today, but have taken him out to find him in blue. Would it be too stressful to move him out of his familiar home now? Should I wait till after he's shed? |

I've always moved mine on feeding day to cut down on days. I feed then put them straight into their new viv. You have to leave them 2-3 days to digest anyway, so easy to leave them a week and saves a missed feed too |

I feed mine a week before moving and leave a week to settle so two weeks without food. |

Part of the reason I'm not putting him straight into the whole space is my lack of an adequate heat mat.
I'll be one buying soon, but would rather get it online than premium price in our local stores. I also want to research and plan in lighting/heating etc. I was thinking having him in the smaller space for a month or so till I've designed the layout and bought the gear. However, when I put him in there he looked so small I wondered if it should stay partitioned for longer.

I'd give him the whole space now, with plenty of hides and cover he will be fine. I think far too much is made of this "too much space", mine have all been fine in their final vivs from 9 months. |

The mat looks fine to me and I guess it depends on how fast he grows as to when you can give him the full space to use. If you put lots of cover in there it might not be that long to wait. |

P.S. I know the temp reading on the thermometer is low - the probe had moved while moving him around. |
