Posted - 02/07/2012 : 18:41:38 Put it this way - your snakes constrict raw prey. This prey has been frozen, so it's probably fine, but still it's raw meat and it has been left to defrost for a while before they get their gobs on it. They also are likely to have gone sliding through their own poop at least once in their life..so they're not the best things to lick.
Having said that, if you wash your hands properly before and after handling them, you'll be fine :) My boa gives me kisses on my face every time she comes out, no avoiding it, she's a charmer like that! |

Posted - 02/07/2012 : 15:10:55 When I still studied veterinary medicine, we were told to bring a fecal sample of our own pets to university and run some tests on it. My Saphira carries like 3 different kinds of Salmonella, lol. Never had issues with it though, got some antibacterial gel right next to the viv :) |

Posted - 02/07/2012 : 11:55:33 SO long as you follow basic hygiene, use an anti-bacterial soap/hand rub and don't lick your snakes, you should be okay, Sorry to hear you've had it though! |

Posted - 02/07/2012 : 10:07:33 Cheers guys for the very speedy replies I'm fine now thanks It was just a concern as it just twigged that the timing was spot on so it must have been from the snake I had thought I'd taken all precautions with regards to hygene, I.e wash before and after handling and I haven't had to clean her out yet either But yes I will have to be more carefully.. I suppose we'l develope immunity to some extent too |

Posted - 02/07/2012 : 09:55:57 Matt, Salmonella is as you have read commonly spread from reptiles. This can be avoided with the use of an anti-bacterial / alcohol gel hand wash after handling. I have a reduced immune system and it does not stop me enjoying my snakes, just take some precautions and all will fine. Hope you are making a good recovery. Hope this helps and puts your mind at rest. |

Posted - 02/07/2012 : 09:54:00 well, any pet can carry salmonella, so thats why good hygiene must be followed. wash your hands before and after handling your snake, clean your viv regularly and keep anything you use for your snake separate (such as cleaning cloths). most important is to wash your hands after handling your snake though, if you use an anti-bacterial gel/soap you should be fine |
