Hi,
I have had a few mite problems recently but it seems to have cleared up now, I took all the bark out and replaced it with paper to monitor my snake and the mite problem.
So this evening checking on my snake ive found out he is blue, so what I was wondering is, with no bark in the viv will it make it more difficult for him to shed?

2nd question: what's the best way to check the new bark doesn't have mites? Roast it in the oven? Poor boiling water on it? What's the quickest and most efficient way people have found because I really don't wanna put my gorgeous boy through all that again.

Thank you for your time

If you've had him on kitchen towel with a minimalistic viv and you're based in England where we've had a few hot, dry days then you might find your humidity dropped while he was shedding, causing the bad shed.

Ara's shed before last was pretty bad, but he shed soon after to clean himself up I think and I made sure to spray his faun twice daily til he'd shed. His latest shed was all in one piece.

Hi,
Yes it was shop bought bark so if they didn't come from
The bark I have no idea where they would have come from?

He started to shed this morning, when I woke up there were lots of bits everywhere and still
Quite a lot of shed on him, which is unusual
For him to have a bad shed - is it a sign that he may be unwell? I will
Give him a bath today and let him go
Through a towel, this will be the 1st time I've ever had to bath him in the 8years I've had him
So I don't know how he'll take to the water.

Thanks again for all your advice and input I really appreciate it!

:P

theres nothing wrong with using bark its just not ideal for corns as bark is more for using with species that need higher humidity as its good at holding moisture. but saying that i still back my bark for bumbles viv.

I didn't mean it wasn't shop bought bark. Sorry if it sounded that way.

hi ya. ok few things first was it shop brought or just loose garden bark. how long ago have you been clear of mites, mites can still appear weeks after u think they have gone. id be suprised if they mites come from the bark, mites need to have a host to live so for mites to come in from substrate is unusual. they are other forms of mites that do come from barks but arnt any problems to a snake..id leave on tissue or newspaper for a few months to be sure they have gone. will shed fine on them.

Sounds like he has plenty to get the shed started etc.

Let us know how he gets on.

Thank you for replying, he has a large wooden branch in his viv as well as 2 caves and his water bowl is pretty large and ridged too, so do you think that will be enough to help him start to shed? I could chuck some kitchen roll tubes in as well?

molly once shed on my hand.. i gave her a bath then she started pushing her head against me, and wa-la! does help though having something a bit rigid in there even if there is a cardboard hide or something with corners
