I've owned my corn snake for about 1 week now and he has reached his feeding time. I bought frozen mice at the store. I successfully heated up the water in the coffee mug to thaw out the frozen rodent. Got the rodent to be warm, and used feeding tongs to try to feed the snake. Unfortunately he did not take the rodent. So my question right now is how can I get him to eat, and is it ok to leave the rodent in the tank for him to get to on his own time?

That's it

Okay thanks guys. I'll get one for the pad as well. So to reiterate, wait about another week to feed him without handling , while changing the water. Correct?

No, the mat should be on a thermostat, that is all the heat required by night, as stated mine kicks in if the temp drops below 75, bulbs/ceramics are on a timer and controlled by a dimming stat set at 82.

You defo need a stat on both heat sources.

The heating pad is on 24/7 and runs the same temp no matter what. The bulb I manually turn off and on. Turn on in morning and turn off at night. And I will cut down on the bedding and add in a small hide on the other end . The max temp in the basking spot (between the heat pad and bulb) reaches between 80-82F . Should I need a heat bulb for night as well? ( meaning a red night bulb)

3 inches of aspen may be slightly excessive. i would work it from a sprinkle on the hot end and gradient it up to 3/4 of an inchh - inch at the cold end. you should have atleast 2 hides, one at each end. x

I'm assuming you have the bulb on a dimming stat and the mat on a mat stat, if so you should have the bulb set to around 82 and the mat at around 75, mat on 24/7 enabling you to have a day/night setup, the bulb should be on for no more than 12 hours and the mat stat will kick in if the temp drops below 75, this is how I run my vivs that have both bulbs/ceramics and mats. Of course you really don't need bulbs for corns but I personally like the night drop.

Are you using a stat on your lamp and mat?
Sk8892 Posted - 07/05/2012 : 22:40:27
Basking spot as in he can climb to get closer to the heat bulb or he usually buries in the bedding to be real close to the under tank heater. Is that ok? Or should I put the hiding rock on the side of the tank heater and get a bigger watt for the heat bulb?

Ideally should be about 82F in warm spot - but when you say basking spot - does he have an area that is warm but also has a hide? He needs to be able to snuggle away somewhere about 82F in order to digest a meal - normally this would be on a heat mat, or as you say the under tank heater. The substrate in the hot area should be very thin and a digital thermometer probe should be placed touching the area where the snake would be sitting to make sure it's right (eg a dial thermometer on the side would give a vastly inaccurate reading)

Oh ok my snake is approximately a foot in a half to 2 ft. I've been using aspen snake bedding . Temp stays around 80 F in basking spot and 73 ish in cooling spot. He has a rock to hide under an a water bowl to soak in. Along with that I have some greenery and vines fr him to climb on. It's a 30 gal tank . The heating is from two sources: a heat bulb ( basking bulb about 75 watts) and a under tank heater. Which is on the same side as the bulb. Bedding is about 3 in thick. Does this seem well accommodating?

I agree with what has already been said. Leave the snake alone for another week with no handling and only doing water changes and then try again. Could just bet hat s/he will take a little bit longer to settle in
Georgina Posted - 07/05/2012 : 10:34:31
As above really, what is your set up like? Temps? Size? X
Okeetee Mick Posted - 07/05/2012 : 10:12:38
I'd leave him alone for another week, no handling etc, most will feed when hunger sets in. Having raised snakes before you will obviously know what size food to offer.
lupi lou Posted - 07/05/2012 : 09:59:31
it is fine to leave the food in with them and leave them to it. some are shy eaters. first time i fed jinx he wouldn't take it off the tongs i had to leave it in with him and leave him alone.

It can be quite normal for a new snake to not eat on its first feed. Did you leave him alone (apart from changing water) for the first week to let him settle? If you can give us as much information about your setup and snake age, size and weight it will help.
