Posted - 25/04/2012 : 22:11:01 Hi guys, I'm setting up a new viv for Ara and have got my hands on some fake grass.
It's not 'proper' fake grass and therefore is a bit rougher to the touch. It's the kind meant for greengrocer's and/or butchers. 'Real' fake grass is pretty damn expensive by comparison so I thought I'd try this out first.
I've put Ara on it and he doesn't seem bothered, moves around easily. My concern is that maybe it's too rough? He'll have aspen around his heatmat and warm hide area and then this over the rest of the ground areas in his viv.
What is too rough for a cornsnake? It's flexible but he wouldn't be able to burrow in it. It's about 10mm pile. |

Posted - 26/04/2012 : 08:37:50 Way ahead of you there lotabob! The piece I got is 2x the size I need, so I can cut it up. I've only got two snakes so maintenance at this point can afford to be a little high.
Spree - I can rub my hand over it and tread on it with bare feet quite happily, I personally think it'll be safe, it's just not as soft as the luxury fake grass you get. I'm not that experienced with snakes though so I'll always ask and I'll take into consideration what you've said - right now the viv set up is airing/drying from sealant so I've got a little while to see if I can come across some seriously luxurious fake grass at a very low price! |

Posted - 26/04/2012 : 00:23:58 Its a snake with scaled belly, they live on wood, earth, gravel etc so I think fake grass is a much softer option. You'll be sick of cleaning it with corns twice weekly pappings though, you'd need 2 lots one in the viv one out for cleaning. |

Posted - 25/04/2012 : 22:44:55 Hmmm, that looks like it might be a bit scratchy. I know snakes are made to be tough, but I'd be a bit worried about it causing irritation over time, but I can't say without touching it! I'd say, if you're not sure, take it out, Ara will be just as, if not, more happy on all aspen, because that means more substrate for tunnels! :D |
