Hi, new to the forum.
My corn snake tank reached 110F today for a few hours, will she be ok?
Thanks

If that was the reading you was getting on an analogue thermometer that only read ambient air temperature and not the surface temperature (cornssnakes mainly heat themselves through their belly so the surface temperature is the important reading which is why digital thermometers with a probe are far better) so the actual temperature of the surface would have been MUCH hotter. Its far safer for a corn snake to be cold than it is to be too hot so the heat being off is the lesser evil, just dont feed or handle while cold as they slow their body down into a hibernation state if cold enough.

As to what could have happened if exposed to prolonged extreme heat (in corns this is 30oC+), it could cause brain damage, digestive problems and death.

I would have thought though if your snake had reached an uncomfortable heat you would have noticed cooling behaviour such as sitting in the water bowl, as it goes it probably just sat away from the source of the heat and will be fine but its not worth that risk again so a thermostat just keeps that from happening.

She will be ok as long as your room where she is at a reasonable temperature (not got Windows open all day)

Don't feed her until the stat is up and running at the right temperatures.

Thanks, will get it now :)

The stat that serena posted a link to is a good one to get but any is essential and I would also get a digital thermometer as the analog ones are not very accurate.
Corns7 Posted - 17/03/2012 : 19:55:18
Ok I will have a look. Will she be ok since I have turned all power sources of?
serena_08 Posted - 17/03/2012 : 19:54:06
Digital thermometers are better, and you can get them for 3 quid ish on ebay.
Corns7 Posted - 17/03/2012 : 19:52:27
Heat mat, hydgrometer and analog thermostat
serena_08 Posted - 17/03/2012 : 19:51:49
Thats not a bad set up but now you see why a stat is essential.

That bit sounds ok. Heat mat or lamp? Digital thermometer, one or two?
Corns7 Posted - 17/03/2012 : 19:49:35
I have aspen bedding, a rock hide, water bowl, small log, in a large faunarium, is that bad?
Auld Baldy Posted - 17/03/2012 : 19:48:01
She could well die if you don't take her out immediately and let the tank cool down.

Turn OFF all heating and lights.

Give us the details of your set up for advice on setting things up properly.

I havent got a stat, I'm going to get one though soon I know it's absolutely essential.
What will happen if it gets way to hot?
