Posted - 27/10/2011 : 23:54:31 hi- I want to put a light into Jake's viv; (18x18x12 wooden, glass front doors, fairly standard set up I think?) but I don't know what kind is best? The light is for me, not him- just want to be able to see him better when he's waggling about, especially now he's shed finally after sulking/hiding for a week and he's got his lovely new bright colours. I've read on other threads about lights as a method of heating, and how dangerous they can be etc- so the ideal would be some kind of bulb that doesn't give off any heat. Does such a thing exist? If not, what should I get? strip-lights are quite cool, I believe, (that's temp, not funkiness, haha) Can I use a bog-standard small strip light in the top of the viv? Are there lights particularly for snake-homes that won't burn if he decides to investigate it? AND, do I need to keep to any particular timetable of on/off? Would a light on in the evening confuse him, or is it okay to have lights at night when he's active, even though being nocturnal I guess his eyes might be sensitive? Any help or advice would be very much appreciated. thx, nicky |

Posted - 30/10/2011 : 01:42:39 THANKS everyone- for the help, and the links; those lights look a bit like the kind we wrap around our banister rail at christmas.. (no, I'm not thinking of winding 4 metres of multi-coloured christmas lights inside poor snakey's house! I'm not sure he'd appreciate the flashing sequence, haha) now I know exACtly what I'm looking for, and that it's not going to result in un-fed children, an un-paid gas bill and the bank manager making threatening phone calls in the middle of the night- When I've got something in place I'll post a pic to let you see the end-result. cheers~ nicky |

Posted - 28/10/2011 : 22:30:23 If you're thinking of getting a light try and get one with a low UV level if you can as some people reckon it helps them convert more calcium from the bones they et and get healthier (: but it's not a necessity so if you don't get a UV one don't worry about it |

they work really well. come with everything u need and i cycle them through 3 colours each day...
Morning gloom during my breakfast, warm natural light in the day, sunset Orangey/redddy light and then moonlight. then off when i go to sleep...
looks awesome and they seem to be timing when they come out to what cycle the light is on... ie. sunset and moonlight... |

Posted - 28/10/2011 : 01:15:19 Thanks for such a quick reply! and very useful: I now know what I need to get, to be able to look at jakeysnakey in the evenings.. thankyou-
I do have more questions though now- (sorry!) Will I have to go to a specialist pet-shop to find LED lights like you mentioned, or could I find the same thing in a hardware/DIY shop? I'm guessing that LED strips would be quite expensive? so I could do with finding the cheapest possible way of installing one, and don't want to pay through the nose for fancy packaging with a picture of a lizard on, if I can get exactly the same item but cheaper elsewhere, simply because it's not labelled as being specifically for snakey purposes.. |

Posted - 28/10/2011 : 00:01:15 Led strip lights are a favourite, most are water proof, produce very little heat and the snake can't wrap around and break them. Not to mention easy to install and nice looking.
And as for a schedule, just turn it on when you want to look really, so long as he has daylight during the day and a night period, he won't mind. Just be sensible about it, don't go looking at 3am for example, he probably won't appreciate that xD
All I use my lighting for is cleaning and having a clearer look around in the vivs :) |
