just wanted to ask a question;

whilst in a shop getting some pinkies, a man and his son was looking to buy a corn snake. whilst the women was explaining i thought id listen in. she was saying to get a faun and a heat mat and i was waiting to hear the word thermostat but no. the chap asked about temperatures and she said you can get a thermostat but all she does is switch it on in a morning and back off again at night.

is that right????

don't
it's not your place to advise their customers, and it could have ended up being a pretty awkward conversation/situation/ban from the shop lol
hopefully they'll be so thrilled with their new pet they'll research it on the internet..........and end up here

I pay about £4 for 10 pinkies here so thats a fair price. Like the others says its cheaper when you can buy in bulk from suppliers. But if you only have the one snake (like me) the postage cost balances it to the same as getting it from the shop.

jeez, this just reminds me how lucky i was to end up at the rep store i did! wouldnt be able to hold my tongue if i was advised i didnt need a stat and then found out otherwise!!

our vets at work would prolly have told you a snake needs UV before i worked there lol there's a huge difference between smallies, exotics, farm and equine.
vets tend to do one or the other though large/farm animal, equine and smallie practices used to be quite common. with the rise of equine and farm/large animal specialist practices a lot of mixed practices have dropped their large animal/equine work like we have at work

i can't understand it tho, the shopkeeper is meant to be an ex vet. that's the only reason i went there!
gingerpony Posted - 18/09/2011 : 20:21:44
though i have just watched their 'shop tour' video and that's 2m38s of my life i'll never get back lmao

any decent starter kit comes with a thermostat, they're not the cheapest starter kits but certainly worth their weight in gold

can recommend my local, Paws For Thought in Leeds, for starter kits and accurate, helpful, friendly advice and they do mail order too http://www.leedspetshops.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=65_66_84&products_id=821

Its amazing the amount of shops that dont tell you the importance of thermostats, when i got my first snake i specificaly asked and was told that its personal prefrence, glad i found this place a couple of days later and shot out to buy one!!!
kayjosh Posted - 18/09/2011 : 17:23:10
Being a new owner my matts have come taped to the inside of the glass is this correct - also i was not told about a thermostate so guess where i am going first thing.

I pay £1.40 for 4 pinkys from pets at home ... bit of a rip off considering the price from the direct source but as already said hatchlings are not on pinkys for long so no point buying in bulk I think when both my snakes are adults I'll consider bulk buying though

For the shops profit margin it is. Direct from source they are about 9p each. But if you only have the one snake bulk buying will work out wasteful. Once you get your snake upto a set size you can buy in bulk and save a fortune but for now shop bought is your best option, corns dont stay on pinkies for long.
viraleye Posted - 18/09/2011 : 10:07:56
i just didn't have the guts to say anything being a novice myself. the chap obviously knew nothing about snakes and was taking advice from the shop keeper.

also is 39p a good price for a frozen pinky?

I wish this forum had a 'like' feature so I could use it on your last post gp.

Some of the supposed experienced advice I hear from rep shops is just appalling. Even from some of the highly regarded places. I dread to think how many reptiles are being unknowingly ill cared for by innocent people who simply follow the 'expert' advice they've been given...
gingerpony Posted - 18/09/2011 : 07:24:04
although it's tempting to say something to the owner/staff they generally just berate/belittle you with 'i've been keeping snakes for 30 years' type comments
a good reply would be 'but you're still keeping them how you used to 30 years ago, and herpetology has moved a long long way since then!'

i've found waiting and listening, then following the customer out of the shop and directing them to this website a lot more satisfying

obviously i'm not advising everyone does that..............
viraleye Posted - 17/09/2011 : 19:43:27
i didn't think it was right.

the place i went is supposed to be recommended too because the owner is an ex vet or something. she didn't even mention having the heat mat partially under the faun.

even with my limited knowledge of corn snakes i was tempted to say something
gingerpony Posted - 17/09/2011 : 18:52:19
if a snake is fed on an evening then it's heat source is switched off it will be unable to thermoregulate to digest its food, then it's a race between digestion and decay and if decay wins................. potentially a dead or very poorly snake!

particularly if somebody forgets to switch it on in the morning or off at night!

and there's the whole issue of cooking your snake at 40*C+ during the daytime...........

yes, some people will get away with, they'll get lucky, particularly if their house is always warm and the snake's in a warm room but for the sake of spending £25 on a stat which you switch on, set, then leave.

rubbish shop! would recommend avoiding it!
paulie78 Posted - 17/09/2011 : 18:18:03
Its not right and wont keep the temperature at a consistent acceptable range that seems to be what a lot of the reptile stores here do too or just least them on all day long and use the reasoning that the snake will move if it gets too hot grr

viraleye Posted - 17/09/2011 : 18:00:58
yeah i know what it does. but the shop keeper was saying she just has a heat mat which she switches on in a morning and off at night. that doesn't sound right??
Kittypuss85 Posted - 17/09/2011 : 17:28:51
No, it monitors the temperature through the day, activating the mat once it gets too cold and cutting it off when it gets to the correct sustained temp, repeating the cycle all the time
