Hi
I have just joined the forum today, I am still waiting to get my first Corn Snake, see my introduction:-
http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=19411

My question(s) is this... With a young Corn Snake, when it comes to feeding does it get stressed out if you put it into a separate container, one just for feeding (without substrate).
I have read that some people think the snakes should be left alone in there tank and fed in it also.

Would it learn in time that when it gets put into this different container it means feeding time.

Should I use a separate container for it's very first feed or feed it in it's small tank.

I am feeling that I should put it into a different container as early as its first feed so it will get used to it, rather than it getting settled being fed in it's tank and then after few weeks moving it to a new container to fed.

thanks for any advice.

Agree with thistle, all four have their own small feeding rubs and are weighed before feeding and left for 10 mins.

One of mine is a very aggressive feeder so he's fed in a tub. Once he's swallowed his mouse I can't touch him without him striking so I put the whole tub back in the viv at an angle as others have said and he finds his own way out. I have to disinfect the tub each time otherwise he smells mouse and goes bananas before I can even get him in there! My other one is much calmer at feeding time. He sits on a towel on my bed and I gently lift him back in his viv when he's finished, supporting either side of the bump. I don't feed in the viv as I don't want either of them swallowing substrate or getting snappy when I open the door.

I wait for about 2 mins the place the RUB in the the doorway of the viv and wait until he has gone back in ... i haven't fed buttons yet but will be feeding her in a separate tub too

Its fine to lift the snake up to return it to its viv. I usually wait until the mouse has moved down from the throat and the snake has started moving around again. Some people wait longer until the feeding mode has stopped but I don't usually have time to wait that long and I haven't been bitten after a snake has eaten yet

I feed out of faun, as no guarantee they would stay on the kitchen roll,

I feed mine in a different tubs, and as soon as I put them in they go into feeding mode.

I have their feeding tubs on top of digital scales so that I can weigh the snake while it's otherwise occupied.

I leave mine around 5-10mins. Then put the RUB in its faun at a slight angel and keep and eye on the snake until its made its own way back into the faun. sometimes put it at an angel and put the lid of the faun back on and again just keep an eye on it until its made its way out.

How long should you leave the snake in the feeding RUB before putting them back in their viv, and how do you move them back?

I've read that after feeding the snake you shouldn't handle them for 48 hours, as if they get stressed they may regurgitate the meal... isn't moving containers going to be stressful?

I fed in a separate RUB the first two times, but have fed in the viv the last 2.. currently this works out ok as the viv has kitchen roll down as substrate. However, I was soon going to move to the aspen substrate, so a separate feeding RUB may then be required. When I fed in a RUB previously I sort of tipped it up 90 degrees, then waited for him to crawl out of it back into his cage. However, the tipping can hardly have been stress free.

Thankyou everyone, your comments are all valued.

I think I will feed the snake in a separate container/rub, I would feel awful if the snake was to get sick because of swallowing aspen substrate.

When I bought my youngun, she had a really bad association with tubs because she was originally bought by a couple (along with an aggressive male who was to be her breeding partner) who then split up and took her back. So she had a lot of upset and moving around for all of her baby life which meant to her, tubs were bad. She couldn't wait to get out of the tub I brought her home in but I had to feed her in a separate tub due to aspen substrate ( if they swallow it they can be in serious trouble). First couple of weeks she tired everything not to go in the tubs. But after that she knew it meant food and I have no trouble putting her in, in fact she shoots in now and starts hunting!
Long story short. Snakes are tough little creatures and will adjust if you are consistent. Keep to a routine, I feed my males in their tanks and my females in a separate one because that is what they have always done. Young snakes will always be flighty and seem stressed because everything is new to them!
hope that helps too!

I feed both ways depending on time. If it's getting late and I just want to go to bed then I will put kitchen roll in the vivs and chuck the mouse in on that. My hoggies, king and one of my corns will only eat in their vivs. I try feeding them out of it every so often but that usually results in stress and a refusal even when I do return both snake and mouse to the vivs.

Mine all get fed in seperate tubs aside from my shy Hoggie who has her food placed on top of her hide overnight, and my MBK as he was fed in his viv by his original owner.

I feed my two in seperate tubs i know theres a bit of a divide on this one but i feel at least im taking steps to prevent any accidents occuring by doing so lol

I think quite a few of us on here feed in separate tubs - it just helps the snake to learn that food doesn't come into the viv (and therefore further prevents any risk of striking)

I too feed my youngster in a separate RUB.
fluffycorn Posted - 14/09/2011 : 07:06:35
I take mine out to feed too, I use a small RUB :)
shaunb Posted - 14/09/2011 : 00:49:33
i always put mine in a separate well i have a brand new washing bowl i brought just for there feeding and they go in there and the they go back once finished eating and the reason is cos there substrate is aspen plus they now it's feeding time as well
Kehhlyr Posted - 14/09/2011 : 00:12:59
Is a valid question.
I put all of mine into different tubs for feeding, however it's simply preference.
You can feed in the viv as well, but I'd recommend putting something like paper towels down for them to feed on if you have a loose substrate (aspen etc).
All of mine do know that when they go into their little tubs that it's dinner time, I just keep my fingers out of the way then.
