Hi Everyone, How are you all? Thanks again for your help with the set-up of my viv.
Sir Hiss has been with me for just over week now and seems to be settled as he ate on Tuesday
However, he seems to only want to hide in his caves (both temps) and I wanted to know if it is acceptable to get him out from there or wait until he is out of his caves (whenever that might be!) He was used as a school/zoo handling snake before I bought him so he has been handled LOADS. Just don't want to upset him.
He doesn't appear to be getting ready to shed - his eyes are normal and he ate Tuesday. So if you guys say you think it's OK to get him out from the caves, what's the best way to pick him up when he is coiled up!!
Cheers Garrie - do you intentionally have the Never Ending Story symbol on your pictures or is that coincidence? I thought it was pretty cool either way!! |

If my snakes are in their hide I drum my finger nails on the glass. This gets their attention and they usually come out to investigate. Then it is a case of moving my hand closer and let them come to me. If they want to play they will slide onto my hand and up my arm. If they don't and I need them out for cleaning or something, then it is a case of gentle 'encouragement'. Don't make a sudden grab, just use your fingers like a twiggy branch and move them around to get the snake coiled around your hand, just like winding spaghetti. Younger snakes might need a bit more wrangling and a gentle grip but it will get easier as it gets used to being handled. The trick is to move confidently, not to fast or too slow. Both could be taken as a potential threat.
Just think, if it was you curled up dozing in bed and someone whipped the duvet away and yanked you out of Dreamland. I bet you wouldn't be too happy.  |

Yep, mine likes to dart away... I have to remove the hides to get him sometimes! I just grab him (firmly but gently!) and handle him for about 15 minutes before putting him back in his faun. Hopefully this'll get him more used to me. |

mine try and dart away all the time but i don't just stop i keep trying until i manage to get them and they will be a bit quick in your hands but do settle very quickly once they realize you are not going to hurt them and the more you handle them the easier they will get all i can say is persevere with it  |

He aint making it easy for you is he, lol! But to get used to handling and removing from his home then just stick at it. If he starts to think that if he darts away you will leave him alone, then he will continue to do it.
Be confident :o) Easier said than done i know! But just remember, if he bites it really doesnt hurt, its more the shock of it thats scary.
And dont worry...im pretty sure he doesnt think you want to eat him! :D xx |

We find it easier to pick Sonny up using a tool ie a pen or the stick in her faun |

Hi guys, we've had Pablo now for about a week and a half. We gave him his week to settle with the exception of changing water and his weekly feed last Monday. We have followed the advice of putting our hands in the viv so he can get used to the smell of us and have tried picking him up by scooping from underneath halfway down his body, however as soon as he feels your touch he is extremely quick to dart away and makes it impossible for us to pick him up without grabbing him to stop him from moving. We're worried this will either hurt him or will scare him into thinking we are going to eat him! Is this the case with either of the two and would it matter if we grabbed him while he's trying to escape? |

when i get mine out there always in there hide al i do is lift the cave and she will be curled up i just go for the middle ov her body and pick her up as Aegis said don't mess about just have confidence and pick him up

My girl is quite often hiding, and most certainly always coiled up! I just make sure she knows im going in to the viv, usually the notice is when i remove the hide from over her. Then i just scoop her up with both hands if she is wrapped up tight, or one hand if she is kinda loosely curled up in the middle of her belly.
Pretty sure that he wont get upset. Just dont hang around, (dont mean that in a bad way) but if you faff around trying to get him in a certain way to get him out, then that might annoy him. I know it annoys mine. Hence why its dive in, pick up, and back out. :o) xx |
