I am sick and tired of frightening myself to death every time I spot a spider in my room, and I want to buy one of those plug in ultrasonic/electromagnetic deterrants.
I have to keep my corn snake in my room and I wanted to know if buying a repellant would distress him? Anyone know if it would off the top of their heads? I don;t want to waste money buying one if it upsets my poor little baby! xD

Hi Karakal, look on the bright side. You will eventualy grow out of the HF sensitivity. The down side is that the older you get the more you get afflicted by Tinitus. lol! ;0) |

Thanks for the suggestion of the catcher, Mort! xD But I don't have a problem catching the little buggers when I see them, I just hate the moments of sheer panic when I have seen one run under my bed! Then I have problems! Hahaha~
I will be trying the preventatives as well, citrus sprays to confuse the holypoopout of their monster feet! But I may still try out an electronic scarer tentatively..
Omg though, Auld Baldy, I have the same problem with hearing the poxy high pitched cat scareres and things! >_< I can occasionally hear a 'pip' of my friends bug/midge deterrant. Terribly vexxing at time, but I have learned to ignore it now.. xD
fluffy, better not tell him we found a massive terrifying spider in a crate of bananas at work once, we put him in a clear pot and called him Frank. Then waited for Defra to come and advise. o_o |

the funniest though is my 18 (yes 18) year old brother sleeping on the sofa for the past few nights because he saw a "gigantic spider" crawl down to his bed and is convinced it's came over in the bananas my dad bought :) |

I've not a clue, and don't think I'd like to hazard a guess either. To be honest you're probably better safe than sorry and not using one.
Have you tried making up a citrus mix?? From recollection spiders 'taste' with their feet and don't like citrus. A small mix of jif lemon and water sprayed in a few different places will make all 8 of their MASSIVE GIANT HUGE HAIRY FEET taste it and should put them off.
Spray it onto where they could get in, window ledges, door frames etc every fortnight or so and I'd imagine it'd keep them away.
Or do what i do and just ignore them, many times I've seen MONSTROUS 8-LEGGED BEASTS happily taking a stroll down my curtains, they get well fed as well because some of them are probably big enough to take down a cricket.

Snakes are more responsive to low frequency vibration rather than audible noise. As these devices operate at high / ultra sonic frequencies so I doubt if it would affect them. Think of 'silent' dog whistles, bat echo location, hoodie youth move-alongs etc which are inaudible to most folk. Exception is young folk. As a teenage youth (long time ago) I could hear the line whistle generated by the TV's of the day. It drove me nuts! That's my excuse anyway.  |

At work, we have a spray called "Midas Spider Ex" to stop spiders setting off the alarms overnight - it certainly does the trick (i work in a converted cow shed, so spiders are a problem...along with woodlice, flies, wasps...)!
Also, we did get one those high pitch electric plug things at some point in the past - it didn't seem to make any difference at all (in fact, if i remember rightly, a colleague put a spider on the plug whilst it was on and it decided to build a home on it) |
