Make sure you keep the box and receipt from when you buy it as well, Habistat have brilliant customer service and will fix/replace any broken units anytime within 5 years, provided it's because the unit has become faulty and not been sat on/drinks spilled on it etc.
Can be a bit miffing though, the only one I ever had break was about 5 and a half years after I bought it, typically.
Still good going though, that stat cost me 17 quid and gave me no problems in that time, and no vets costs due to overheating etc either, so for piece of mind as well as safety, you can't go wrong.

A thermostat usually has 3 cables coming from it. 1 has a plug at the end for plugging into the mains. 1 has a socket at the end for plugging your heatmat into. The third cable has a sensor on the end which sits on your heatmat. The you set the dial on your thermostat to the temperature you want and the heat mat will heat up until it reaches that temperature then it turns off the power to the heatmat until its dropped a couple of degrees then will turn on again. That is a mat stat. A pulse stat works slightly different by heating up to the set temperature and then sending pulses of power to the mat to keep it at that temperature. The important thing to remember with any stat is that the dial can be slightly out so you need to set your mat and stat up a few days before you get your snake so that you can make adjustments to the stat depending on what your digital thermometer is reading.
Hope that helps

Yeah that one is good :) Habistat is a good brand. My heat mats are habistat. A thermostat basically controls the temp that the heat mat gets too. When i got my corn it had a faulty thermostat (which is dangerous to be without one) so my heat mat was sitting at over 40c (waaay too high!)

So thermostats regulate the temp making sure it doesnt get that high!

Dont ask me how to fit it tho cos i cant remember! I get a mate to talk me through it because im not handy like that! haha!

Iv just bought a total of 3 heat mats, and also got new Thermostats. Was highly recommended this ones - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120447626780&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

Cost a little bit more than a Mat stat, but i can also control light from this too. (its not a heat lamp i use, but just for light sometimes at night)

Hopefully its a good buy but the guy that recommended it says they are really worth the money :)

And if u like rocks, just put a normal rock in :o)

ok, i just liked the look of them, thanks for telling me before it was too late!!!!

Heat rocks have a nasty habit of overheating. They are near impossible to regulate the heat from them.
ScalySituation Posted - 12/08/2011 : 14:25:53
ok, any reason?
a33272 Posted - 12/08/2011 : 14:08:45
no dont get a heat rock for a snake end off lol
ScalySituation Posted - 12/08/2011 : 13:54:46
AHHH ok ta! so if i were to get a heat rock when my snake goes into a bigger viv i should get a pulse stat right?
a33272 Posted - 12/08/2011 : 13:49:26
a mat runs best of either a mat stat or a pulse prop stat.

MAT STAT is cheap an basic can only be used with mat. does the job but sometimes has a few degrees variation in temp so hot end will run say between 27-29 degrees. is ideal for bigginers
PULSE STAT. can be used on mats an ceramic heaters. holds a very accurate temperature often no more that .5 degree fluctuation. but is expensive
DIMMING STAT. used for ceramic heaters an bulbs. again expensive wont work with mats to good as needs a certain level of load to operate.

all u need is a mat stat there usually more that half the price of the others

I don't know what the difference is really, I just want to make sure the temp is right as i've seen pics of snakes with burns, can someone explain the difference??

surrey pet supplies is cheapest online place, why u want a dimmer though? if its for mat ya better off with mat stat or pulse prop
