Hey guys, ive just set Ginos new home up and im not sure as to whether he'll be okay or not as I'm worried he wont be warm enough. I've set the heatmat up with a stat, I've set the temperature to 29c but since setting it up the heatmat has not once felt warm and the stat light isn't on which is meant to mean its reached it temperature but the vivs temperature is only at 21c, what should I do? Thanks :)

That's why your temperature reading is so low, you are measuring the ambient air temp with the old fish tank thermometer (and that type of thermometer is really not precise enough) you need to measure the actual surface temperature of the mat, which, I'm sure you know, should be between 27-30 degrees. When your digital thermometer arrives (as others have said) use an elastic band to hold the thermostat probe and the thermometer probe together and place them directly on top of the mat. Then you can adjust the thermostat to get the correct temperature by using the reading on the digital thermometer.

The mat shouldn't feel hot, your body temp is much higher than the temp set for the mat, so it will feel cool to you.

My stat probe is touching the mat but I currently don't have a digital thermometer, as a tempary measure im using an old aquarium one until my digital one arrives

Are your stat probe and thermometer probe touching the heat mat? If the thermometer probe is not touching the heat source it only measuring ambient temperature, something that will not be effected by a heat mat as its a contact heater. Without both probes touching the mat its impossible to set the stat to the right temperature, the markings on the stat are a guide at best.

Thanks for the replies, I just saw my stat light come one for a few minutes but temperature is still a little low so i'll try to rise the stat temp up and see if that helps :)

make sure both probes are together i normally laggy-band them together, and plus ive found on mine that the stat dial maybe a little off so i just turn it up abit leave it to see if the temp goes to the desired temp up on the thermometer, either that or the stat probe might be faluty

edit.
forgot to add my stat is at 90 but ive found that when the thermometer gets to around 85/86 that stat kicks in and turns it off so it might just be stat dial that is off a little

i think the obvious answer would be to turn it up?

(providing the thermometer and stat probes are in the right place)

have you got a thermometer probe over the heat mat to measure the exact temperature, the matturns on and off (when used with a thermostst) to keep the correct temps, you may just not be noticing it cycling on, my warm end can range from 28 - 30c and the cool end 21 - 24c depend on the ambient room temperature.

EDIT - meant to add, if it does turn out that your mat or the stat is faulty, turn the mat off and wait till you have a new one, snakey will be fine for a few days, just don't feed him in that time.
