Hiya
I am new to corn snakes and was given mine with vivarium etc. The viv I have has a strip bulb in it that hasn't worked and also a normal bulb. It has heat mats (2 but I took one out as they were covering the whole floor and I read that just half needs to be covered). I am keeping an eye on the temperature.
Do I need the bulbs aswell? When switched off the viv looks quite dark even on a bright day so I wondered if this was why there was extra lighting. The bulb is not covered either so I am concerned about Calypso hurting herself on it, although as yet she tends to spend most of her time hidden away!!!

I got my stat (Habistat Mat Stat) from Surrey Pet Supplies £19 + £3.99 postage. May get else where a bit cheaper. Depends how quickly you want to get one. May have to pay a little extra for urgency.

Best to get a thermostat for it even so. My friend never used to use them, until a heatmat went haywire and caught fire.

I use a heat bulb during the day it is on a timer so turns on and off at certain times. Temperature wise it's always about 29c little higher little lower and during the night I have a heat mat to keep the temperature constant throughout the night and giver snake a sense of day and night a bit better

I bought my stick on LED lights from B&Q but I know you can get them cheaper from poundstretcher and other such bargain shops

Where is the best place to get these led's that you all keep going on about? Is there any online links to a good supplier

Heat bulbs are not needed if you use a heatmat. As said the heatmat must be connected to a thermostat. I use low wattage energy saving bulbs in my vivs that have light fittings. These don't give off any heat and are only used when I need extra light eg spot checking. However, even though they don't give off any heat they are still all protected by a light guard so the snakies can't crush the bulbs. In my other vivs that don't have light fittings, I use stick on LED lights.

it can also be dangerous due to the snake wrapping around it and cracking the bulb. You may not have seen your snake out but trust me, as soon as the lights are out and all is quiet it would of been exploring every inch of the viv. Corns do not need a humidity gauge as it is not an important requirement. Normally an increase in humidity is only needed if it is having trouble sheding.

Thanks - I have a thermometer and a 'humidity indicator' although these both seem to be the same. The temp seems pretty constant at 29C. I think I might replace the strip light then and get rid of the bulb. The bulb went this morning and the OH has replaced it with a normal one but I have switched it off as i wanted to check here first.

I agree. Heat lamps not needed. IF you want to light the viv up i've seen Strip LED's recommended as they give off little to no heat and are safe for the snake.

I have a bulb in mine too but as far as i know they dont need both on. And Corn snakes dont need extra light. Have you got a thermostat for the heat mat? If so that should control the temp in the viv. And thermometers. I have 2 in mine. One digital and one analogue.

There are pro's on here though so im sure they will correct if im wrong!
