i was just wandering if i should raise my temp a lil on my stat? my snake is in a faun i have the heatmat underneath it when i take a temp reading with my probe underneath the aspen i was at between 30.3 and 31.6 or there about but when i put the probe ontop of the bedding where the snake is chilling he probably is actually chilling lol as its only 26 degrees may drop below as ive just put the probe ontop 15 mins ago and its just this sec dropped to 25.9 so should i up my stat a bit so the temp on top of the substrate is 30? |

ok cool i guess itl be fine then just thought i should ask as i want jake to be happy :)lol i keep hearing him fall he's climbing about round the edge of the faun probs trying to escape lol hes done it about 5 times in 10 mins ha im sat here giggling away at him hes not gunna learn his lesson i dont think hehe.. im still calling him jake and a he lol i really need to get "him" sexed :) |

That sounds fine johno if you are monitoring the temps from the base of the faun over the heatmat. Although the temperature on top of the substrate is lower than required, the base of the faun is at the right temperature so he will be ok to digest his food.
If you look at it this way, if you turn your thermostat up to get the temperature on top of the substrate to 29oC then the temperature on the base of the faun will be getting on for 33oC. Your snake can and most probably will move the substrate off the mat thus exposing itself to temperatures that could burn or cause stress. |

ive always gauged the temps directly off the mat not the bedding and my temps fluctuate between 27.5 and 30.5 and ive not had any problems so it should be fine :) |

ok its now at 29 under the aspen, but only 25 on top (aspen is spread finely) would he digest his food ok at 25c as i thought 28-29 was ideal temps for digesting food then again im pretty much a noob so im probs wrong :) |

I have 2 snakes on mats and both will move the subtrate out of the way to sit as close to the mat as possible. If anything I'd turn the mat down just a smidge, I aim for 28oC heat mats using mat stats swing a bit so try land 28oC in the middle of the swing, takes a bit of time to make tiny adjustments but once you get it there it runs itself, you only need to glance over your max/min temps to keep things hunky dory. |

its around a cm over where the mat is il try make it thinner.
edit: ok so ive made it as thin as possible i can see the faun through the aspen so il leave the probe ontop for now and see how much higher nearer that goes before i consider raising the temp slightly. |

How much aspen you got as thats quite a drop, you only need a smattering of aspen over the mat. dont turn the stat up as corns do burrow so the mat will be hotter than required. |

I'd say making your layer of substrate thinner at the warm end will prob help. |
