I have a dual lucky reptile thermometer which I have been using in 2 vivs, one probe in each viv banded to the thermostat probe in each viv. I have just changed the substrate and thought I would check the temps with a seperate thermometer. The readings are very different.

Probe attached to thermostat probe reads 27.6 in viv number 1
Probe attached to thermostat probe reads 29.1 in viv number 2

The seperate thermometer that I placed in the viv in the exact same location of the other probes reads very different

30.5 in viv number 1
32.0 in viv number 2

I have checked the seperate thermometer and I believe that is accuarte, took my own temp with it, and yes I did disinfect it first. Anyone else had issues with the lucky reptile dual thermometer?
My poor corns must have been feeling somewhat over warm.

Surely that would be fine for corns, measuring the temp of the heat mat surface, as the ambient temps are not needed. If I get a royal then I guess that an infra red thermometer would not be as useful.

They are surface thermometers, they only ever measure the temperature of the surface. You could put an ice cube in an oven at 180 degrees, zap the icecube and still get a near 0oC reading.

Seriously considering getting an infra red thermometer but have read that some of these can be out by nearly 3 degrees.

Just calibrated slightly differently by 2.9 degrees. I have seen the same brand ones reading differently in the same place, I'm guessing a scientifically accurate thermometer would cost a LOT more than £5, I think the food probe thermometers are about £40 and they have to be a lot more accurate than a reptile one.

What is weird, is the difference in the tempreture readings is exactly 2.9 degrees for both vivs....How odd.

I have found that my fortex thermometers read lower than my tn1 infrared thermometer. I keep my temperatures at the lower end of the range according to the fortex thermometers so that if the real temperature is slightly higher it won't matter too much

we've had problems with odd readings when the batteries needed replacing in our digi therms (various brands, not LR)

and thats a good reason why learning your snakes' behaviour and tailoring your husbandry to suit them is beneficial
