hello there im a newbie with a corn snake looking for some help the snake hached on 14june and i got it on the 22.23june its eat twice ok but it dosnt seem to like me lol if i go in my rm and its out in the tank as soon as it sees me it just shoots of realy qwickly and hides its not out during the day it just hides under the aspen and if i go to handle it it dosnt like it it runs off so looking for advice on hadling is it like this case it so young ? will it calm down ?and do i have anything to worry about i was told to handle it and if its hideing just find it and take it out sound like this would stress it out to me ??if i put me hand in tank it dosnt come and check it out just stays hide its not gone to strick me yet is it best to leave it for a bit ? realy hope you can help me with this sory for the long winded post any advice would be great yours derek
just not sure what to do for the best read and been told so much..and if it hideng can you go find it and get it out or will it stress it ???? |

Glad you've managed to hold him. The more you get him out the easier it will become, you'll soon be handling him like a pro. |

hello again many thanks for the info and the one that got back to me and iv bite the bullet  and still a little jumpy when i pick up but it soon settles down and just gose through me fingers and up me arms and seems happy to do so il keep you all posted and no dout il be back for more help lol thanks again guys and girls |

i kinda had the same thing with mine, always very nervous when i went to pick her up.
i just bit the bullet and picked her up, held her for 5 mins or until she calmed down and then put her back, do this afew times a week, expect after feeding leave min of 48 hrs. pretty soon he'll start to recognise your scent and will relax. Herriotfan makes a good point about the sock, i didnt the same and it seemed to work. Worth a try at least!!

As everyone else has said, hatchlings tend to be a lot more skittish than older corns. Just remember to let him settle in for at least a week. Once that done with, you can proceed to handle your snake. My opinion is that you pick him up from the middle of his body so you won't both hit his head and freak him out or grab him by the tail and cause him to squirm (which could injure his spine). Then support his body with both hands. Keep handling sessions to about 10-15 minutes at first, but once he's used to you (and older) you can keep him out longer. It's also a good idea not to handle them more than 3 times a week. |

Welcome to the forum. It's normal for young snakes to behave like yours. It may sound harsh but you just have to go for it and gentle 'grab' the snake and just let it slither round your hands. It will learn to settle down with you but it can take some time. The sock trick is good and works well for some people. When you get your snake out make sure you hold him/her over a soft landing, just in case he/she falls. If you hold on quite firmly, but not too tight, you should be ok. You might find that you can scoop your snake up if it's under a hide but if it does make a dash for it then you really will just have to be firm.
That all sounds rather intense but you'll soon get the hang of it and your snake will soon get used to being handled. Once they're out with you they soon calm down. |

You will prob get better advice in other posts!
Put a clean sock in your top for the day, then put in snakes hide, this will help snake get used to your scent.
Dont handle 48 hrs after feeding
Take out to handle just for 10 min a day, ignore any strike, if you leave him alone if he does this, he will learn how to get left alone!
so just pick him up, let him go through your fingers.
He will have a nosy around at night time |

Hi there When you 1st bring your snake home it is advised not to handle them at all for at least a week for them to settle into their new surroundings. With hatchlings they tend to be very scared and very nervous so give snake time to settle in and then take it from there. What is your snake's set up like? |
