I got my corn snake on Monday from a reputable reptile shop. With the kit they gave me orchid bark for substrate and reading your forum I see that it's not recommended. I would like to change it to Aspen as he does seem to like burrowing under rather than go in his hides.
Should I wait until he is due to be cleaned out before changing the substrate? He is still settling in so I've left him alone since I brought him home & am loathe to unsettle him again.
Any advice welcome!  |

widmer feeds keep it outside, so ill just go please can i have a bag of that stuff thingy that looks like straw haha |

^ I have that problem when I go into pets corner, they can't pronouce it right either but they know what I mean. If they don't "it's got a green horse on it" works XD |

Im tempted to start using aubiose, we have started using widmer feeds nr me and they sell massive bags! is this stupid but how is aubiose said? like i dunno how to prenounce it lmao! |

I use aubiose every time. It's just as good as aspen (I can't tell the difference) but is really cheap. I get mine for less than £10 for 20kg pack. |

We used to use orchid bark but had the humidity problem so as mentioned above we just baked it in the oven for half hour to dry it out and used to bag up and then switched to aspen :) |

I use orchid bark in 2 of my vivs, if you stick it in the oven and dry it out a bit its good stuff, though I don't envy you trying to find corn poo in orchid bark (I use beech chip for the corn, I'd never find his messes on orchid). |

Thanks, really helpful. There is quite a lot in there, enough for him to bury under. I'm due to feed him for the first time on Saturday so I think I'll see how that goes before making any changes! |

it's entirely up to you..........if you really want to change i'd probably do it sooner rather than later then start your 7-day settling in period again
or if there's a fair amount of substrate in the starter kit you could use it up and then change?
orchid bark i'd definitely bake though as it makes the enclosure too humid, it can also harbour creepy crawlies! |

Orchid bark is fine to use, it's just that sometimes it can be a bit damp or if the snakes do like burrowing then it's not as easy as aspen or aubiose.
It's optional to use a substrate like that at all really, it's just more pleasing for us.  |

give him the 7 day period then switch thats what i would do you may need another 7 days after that. |
