I was asked this question today, do snakes need lights to distinguish between night and day, I said they can see so will know when its naturally dark, is this right ?

Snakes have got amazing eyesight, they do see colour but what colours is not known. From the research I have done they can also see the uv spectrum that we cant.

yes, they need daylight and darkness and the length of each per 24 hour cycle is one of the triggers that lets them know which season/time of year it is

eg. the daylight hours getting longer usually indicates the start of spring and going into summer - the breeding season! - so the snake can act accordingly!

Short answer is yes. Whether its natural light through a window or a light bulb day should be light, night should be dark.
