I was asked this question today, do snakes need lights to distinguish between night and day, I said they can see so will know when its naturally dark, is this right ? |

Snakes have got amazing eyesight, they do see colour but what colours is not known. From the research I have done they can also see the uv spectrum that we cant. |

yes, they need daylight and darkness and the length of each per 24 hour cycle is one of the triggers that lets them know which season/time of year it is
eg. the daylight hours getting longer usually indicates the start of spring and going into summer - the breeding season! - so the snake can act accordingly! |

Thanks my living room where I keep her is always dull due to loads of trees outside my wall so I keep lights on in the room x |

Short answer is yes. Whether its natural light through a window or a light bulb day should be light, night should be dark. |
