First Post! :D

hello everyone. I recently purchased a 21x11x13 (assuming about 12 gallons or so) glass aquarium. This is a temporary home for the snake i plan on getting ( probably 3-4 months max)

I have a 1.5 foot snow strip corn being saved for me at the pet store for two weeks while i wait for more income, and the proper habitat set up.

I currently have a thermometer on both ends of the tank and a humidity gauge. 2 places for him to hide, once on each end. A water dish about an inch and a bit deep. 6 inches in diameter.

Temperature inside the cage without light or heat mat is about 72 degrees.

My question: Heat mat or basking light? Or both?

Can I use a heat mat, and a regular 75w household bulb? Is 4$ basking light better? or a life glo? Is any direct light necessary in a well lit room?

I get so many conflicting opinions from pet shops and the web. Some say no heat pad. for the extra 35$ to get a light set up, is it worth it? I just want a happy snake :D

Ill post pics once i get my set up done. Cant wait to bring Otis home!!!!

20" + 11" = 31" (assuming 11" is the depth not the height, not that it makes much difference in this case lol) so that size tank will happy house a corn up to 31" long, you've probably got a bit of time yet before you need to get a bigger one

Perfect! Thank you very much!

Another question:

I have a 20x11x12 tank. Ive only handled the snake once and assume it is about 1.5 feet (max). Should I go get a 30inch tank before even putting the snake in the 20inch? I dont want to have him get used to the 20, then have to move him right away. I know these guys grow fast. just not sure how fast lol

an on/off rheostat/thermostat with a heatmat is PERFECT for corns
the mat should cover about one third of the floor space of the enclose, can be run 24hours a day and will be a lot more economical than running a bulb, or bulb-mat combo

would suggest the UTH as the better option, the 2nd link i think, and a separate stat.

What do most people prefer? Ill probably go with the heat pad to start out with. it seems like it will be easier to control the climate in the tank with the pad hooked up to a thermostat. This was what i was thinking.......

And if you go for a light make sure you use a guard.

hi and welcome, Just by using a mat alone will be fine for the heating also just by using a light source alone is fine, you really dont need both so is really down to your personal preference.

Just make sure whatever heat source you use is statted.

Light is obviously the cheaper route. and money is tight right now
