Our corn snake is about to be 3 years old. He seems very healthy but recently he has become much more restless and tries to get out of his tank, whereas previously he's kept himself nearly always hidden away and has rarely been particularly keen to come out. We take him out more days than we don't but when he's out we tend to be holding him as he makes a quick getaway otherwise. We've lost him a couple of times in the past, for about a week each time. I'm wondering whether now he's bigger, we could give him more freedom, e.g. leave the tank door open and let him roam around the room. Our flat is not very tidy so he could easily get lost. Is there any possibility of a corn snake finding their own way back to their tank when they're ready for a mouse? Any tips gratefully received.

One of my males has spent the last few weeks trying to get out of his viv. So much so that he has rubbed a patch on his nose. Thankfully it isn't bleeding and doesn't look sore. The only dumb question is one not asked so don't worry. Animals don't always know whats good for them (like the dog that decided to chase and attack the side of my car while I was driving down the street) so we have to do the sensible thing for them. That means keeping them safe and secure.

Thanks very much for your responses. I am a novice and I can see you all think I'm dumb but it is quite hard to see him pushing really hard to get out when he's already been out for a long time. i hadn't thought about the mating thing - that is really useful to know. I suppose a plastic snake companion wouldn't help. I really don't want him to be unhappy! Many thanks for the advice.

When I looked all was peaceful, but the boa was curled up on a shelf trying to be as far away from the rest as possible.
I just left the shop speechless.

i'm not surprised you did!!!
it annoys me because the snake's ultimately suffer, then they're sold on to somebody who thinks it's ok to house several species like this 'because their local pet shop does it'..............*and breathe.............*

I think some pet shops have no idea how to care for reptiles, as my first snake was a baby corn snake when I was 11 years old, it was sold to me in a 6foot tank! It escaped very shortly after going home and was killed by a neighbours cat after we couldn't find it, after that I did more research as I was 11, I thought the pet shop must know better!!but some are just idiots!!!it never should of come in that size tank!

also my friend that breeds BDragons has also seen some BDRagons at at petshop with tails dropping off or black, flakey skin and black feet, a problem easily solved by as adding calcium to the sand and correct diet! Again, aother example of pet shops not knowing properly about animals

I let my Cali king free roam in my office, but that is only because the room is small and has no holes or gaps that a snake could get through. Trust me I have checked thoroughly. Karla is also fully grown and easy to find in here. Even so, I would not trust my corn to wander. 15 to 20 minutes crawling through my arms and clothes (they do love sleeves) is fine for my corn.

Not a good idea to let him roam free. He may be more active because he's wanting to find a female!

chances are you'd never see him again at some point

tbh i think that's one of the most irresponsible ideas i've heard...........only beaten by the JCP and corn sharing a viv.

I certainly wouldn't recommend letting him free roam,he could very easily end up in a dangerous situation.
He's probably got lady snakes on the brain and it will pass.

No, they would not find teghre way back and I would really advised not to purposely let a snake free roam!

Snakes will try and escape a tank, specially with this season. It's natural. Doesn't mean he wants more room.
