Hi there I'm looking to buy a 24XL beech Viv for my two baby corns and was wondering what I should use to heat it? I currently have them in a converted aquarium with four hides aspen shaving etc... (which is about the same size as the 24XL Viv) with the warm end near a radiator and the cool end away from it, both ends of the Viv are at the correct temperature as I have two thermometers, one at either end. So my Corn Snakes are doing fine, eat fine and are very active, but my heating bill is going to be extortionate so I need some advice on what I should do, I also need a new Viv because the one I have now is slightly cracked at the bottom and next time I clean it it'll probably fall apart... 
- So what should I do?
- What do i use to heat the new Viv I'm going to buy?
- Can someone explain to me how a reptile thermostat works please is it the same as a house one?
And
- How do I check the temperature in the new Viv when a heat mat doesn't effect the air temperature only objects in the Viv?

Yeah, just bought, a dual habistat, two heat mats and a digital thermometer/hydrometer for there new enclosers which will be two 16L rubs, one for each.
My smallest baby corn just shed full skin, hes looking shiny than ever |

Heatmats are ideal. Have a look at the sticky on setting up for a hatchling.

You could always put them into rubs or faunariums to start with, very cheap and the corns do fine in them. |

Mine don't have any lighting at all so i don't know about that but you really should think twice about housing them together. |

And is fluorescent light that comes from an energy saving bulb ok? Or is it too bright and could it damage there eyes? bearing in mind that it is white fluorescent light and not clear incandescent light... |

Yes i'm aware that this can happen, but i was unaware that they could mate before they was ready coursing serious health problems, but like usual theres always the conflicting argument that it won't happen, I mean both my baby corns are practically same size and I'm sure if they did mate too early then evolution would surely suffice death In a matter of speaking? |

Lighting isnt really an issue for corns; the natural light coming through your windows (obviously dont put the viv in direct sunlight though!) is fine for a day/night cycle.
A couple of people on here use LED bulbs to light their vivs.

Hey, thanks, yeah I think I'll try that so basically the thermostat controls the heat mat? (and I only keep the one radiator on but its a lot of messing around turning radiators on and off plus the bills... grr)
What should I do about lighting then so the snakes can have a day/night cycle? also can I plug my 60w light in the thermostat too because I've found that its too powerful for the smaller vVivs. I mean even in the converted aquarium I'm using now with poor insulation it gets way too hot... And if I can't do that then is putting an energy saving bulb outside the Viv to mimic the day/night cycle ok, or will it damage the snakes eyes because I've read that incandescent clear bulbs can severely damage their retinas.

i'm assuming your babies are kept seperately so they don't eat each other or breed too early?
a heatmat cover about one third of the viv floor space is ideal for corns
basically the heatmat goes on the floor of the viv with a thin layer of substrate over the top, the thermometer and thermostat probes then rest on top
basic on/off type thermostats work like a house thermostat switching the heat mat on when it drops below a certain temp and switching off when it reaches a certain temp |

hey!
il try to answer your questions. i thik for corns a heat matt is the best way of heating a viv! you get one that covers 1/2 to a 1/3 of the viv+you plug it into the stat! the stat then gets plugged into the mains! A didgital thermometer is the most accurate way of measuring temps+if you place the probe of the thermometer next to the probe from the thermostat, both laying on the heat mat...this should give you a very accurate temperature reading! If i were you id buy a matt+stat+didgital thermometer+turn your radiators off! saves on the bills+i cant imagine how uncomfortable it'd be for you having the central heating on 24/7 in the summer, JUST to heat the viv! |
