Hello all.

Little Spectre has some symptoms that are worrying us, I wonder if anyone can throw some light, or have some advice for us.

The scales around his head are slightly dimmer and less shiny than they were, and his eyes have developed a sort of greyish sheen (like cataracts). He is a very young snake (not even a year).

We were a bit worried about his home - he did have (until today) a coconut hide with a small hole in the top which he likes squeezing through. He is slightly too big to do this now, but still occasionally tries. Is it possible he has hurt himself doing this? And what should we do about it?

Or is this nothing to worry about and all part of some natural process (e.g. shedding)?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

I know how you feel, mine's just shed for the first time and I was convinced he was ill and it was his final hours! They like to worry you

He seems to like his hide, and it is plenty big enough for him. We have now solved the problem by (thanks to a tip from another poster here) sewing two buttons together on each side of the hole. He now seems like a much more happy snake, rather than the snake on death's door that we were fearing! Thanks everyone!

panic over lol

if he still fits inside his favourite hide it's just the hole is too small, are you handy with a drill or junior hacksaw?

Yes this is shedding! I'd get rid of the hide, you don't want a stuck snake and they can be really stupid and get wedged tight....

Ahem. I apologise for my panic. I have now read the sticky on shedding, and realise that this is about shedding. We have, however, removed the coconut hide, and plan on making it safer for him to use.
