......Does a heatmat take to reach it's top temp?

I am setting up Nimbus's faunarium ready incase I do get to bring him home wednesday. I have not got a mat stat yet but thought I would see what the temps like without, just out of interest but will not put him in until I have one.

The heat mat has been on for an hour now with the faun ontop, no substrate, and it is only just getting up to 28c and seems to be struggling. I think I may have a dodgy heat mat grrrrr!

glad you sorted it :)

Well it's up to 34.8c now so just shows why you need a stat!

I have a digi themometer and the probe is inside the tub and touching the base directly over the heatmat. No substrate in there yet.

I know what you mean about it only heating the contact area. I kinda expected it to heat the whole faun lol now I see how it works and glad it's not a dodgy mat, just me being thick lol

It's also not designed to heat the air either.
It's designed to heat whatever is in contact or very close contact with it. You may find that the bottom of the faun and substrate might've been hotter.
How were you measuring the temps and what with?

OMG, I am such a dope. I just tried the above with the sweet tub and got the temp up to 32.5c and still climbing so the mat works fine. Reason I am a dope......when I tried it with the faunarium on the heat mat I didn't put the lid on DOH! lol

Feel free to laugh at me :o(

Well I'm just trying a little test now. Just trying it with a small tub over the heat mat (old haribo sweets box) with lid on, just to see if I can get the temp higher.

i always find that it is harder to heat a faun with just the mat is there is alot of ventilation so hard just to get it to temp.....
