OK so I have now fitted a 20 watt heat mat and a habistat mat-stat (basic but does the job) in my vivarium. It will be holding a nice constant temperture of around 25-26 degrees, I still have my heat bulb which is controlled by a timer and a dimming stat and will come on from 8am to 6pm and push the heat to 29-30 degrees. I'm hoping this should give the best of both worlds and the mat should only really be running through the night as during the day the bulb will push the temperature past its cut off temperature. I know this is a long way round heating but night temperatures worried me and now I might get a full nights sleep and save a fortune on my central heating bill.

I have 1 probe for the mat-stat directly on top of the heat mat, the dimmer stat probe is just poking through on the surface of the substrate with direct line of sight to the bulb. The two probes are banded together and have a thermometer probe attached to the side of them directly inbetween the two stat probes giving me the best measure of both mat and bulb temps. The bundle of probes is also a good measure for the substrate thickness over the mat side.

it's a good plan, though more expensive to set up it should work a treat as long as your probes are well positioned
