Im not being sick/morbid here but i am just curious as to how the ready frozen mice are humanely killed before being frozen as its just something i wondered about the other day??? Any answers greatfully received....

I'd have thought that any company dealing with euthanasiing mice would use something like liquid nitrogen to kill them. I would think it would be over in milliseconds, no ice crystal formation because of the rapid freezing and once frozen the liquid can be drained off.
I've seen a program where someone who extracts venom from tarantulas use C02 to render them unconscious ready for extracting the venom. |

Doesnt really matter how you do it, the overall shock and trauma kill the mouse instantly.
I dont agree with the freezing water technique for pinkies, through experience.
I dropped a pinkie in freezing water, i had to break the ice, dropped the pinky in, it didnt move, 20 minutes it was in there, submerged whilst i sorted things out, it spent another 20 minutes submerged in warm water, then i left it with the baby snake, 24 hours later i came back to a live healthy baby mouse, which i then put back with the mother, its now a perfectly healthy adult mouse.
i let him live as he obvioulsy had a strong desire for it!!!
Snakes killing mice is quick, usually less than 10 seconds.
i think people forget that snakes are born with a natural instinct, they are not like most animals that can be domesticated, they know what they are doing, its natural for them to kill their prey, just like every other carnivore in the wild. |

Someone said gassing is more humane than being slowly squeezed by a snake...
I have to disagree. I have watched a friend live feed a young royal and an older Corn. Both refuse to eat pre-killed prey.
It was over in 3 or 4 seconds, if that.
I think that the strike alone broke the animals neck, rendering it unconscious. And the first coil was thrown so quickly and powerfully I don't think the mouse felt much.
Out of interest, is live feeding illegal in the UK? Or just not advised?

nope instant death which is good  and the mice get knocked out so they dont feel any pain if it was that cruel i think animal rights would be on our tails |

a small dose of co2 puts them to sleep then its turned up so they die in their sleep without knowing its happened.
freezing older mice is painful because ice crystals will form in the blood/lungs/etc etc before death which is a painful death. This applies to any animal, reptiles especially due to their mega slow metabolism so if anyone tells you to put a snake/lizard in the freezer to euthanise it, don't do it! :( |

gassing the mice is the most humane method of killing huge numbers of animals, rats aswell, they dont snap their necks, no matter what size they are.
pinkies die very very quickly when put in the freezer, they have no thermal protection and they shut down very quickly.
For those that think a snake kills its prey slowly, watch it, up close. i do on a regular occasion, infact every time i feed 4 baby royals, every time i feed one of the boas.
I can promise you, its quick, very quick. Quicker than gassing. the only method i have come across that is quicker is swinging them and smacking them on a hard surface, which is the way i kill any excess mice. |

Oh thanks for the replies guys i have to admit i dont like the thought of any of the methods mentioned as they all sound stressful for the mice, but i guess being put in the freezer/freezing water is probably the quickest and least drawn out for them..... |

sorry the above post is wrong lol its not their immune systems
Reason being is that pinkies and fuzzies metabolise the gass verry slowly(probably from being burried under their litter mates and not getting much air anyway) and it's actually a terrible death for them. The cold kills them much faster. |

pinkies have slower immune systems so it would actually be more cruel to gas them as it would take them longer to die that way, freezing isnt instant but i dont think its as long as gassing would.
i have heard of people who dispatch them by cervical dislocation (google it) or just wacking them up the wall straight before feeding to the snake. |

A work colleague asked if you get vegetarian snakes yesterday! She wasn't too impressed watching some feeding videos on youtube! (granted some where of live rabbits and guinea pigs!)
I've seen a few videos on youtube of people with DIY CO2 chamber setups and it does look a little bit less peacefull than it sounds. The mouse lays down and breathes really heavily before slowly passing out, it looks quite stressed out while it's breathing so heavy :( But I guess its a much more peaceful way then having a snake coiled around you, slowly squeezing you to death. |

they can breathe, they're just breathing in CO2 which makes them fall asleep, then as the CO2 is increased they just don't wake up
not sure about pinkies though
a friend of mine died of hypothermia a few years ago, the thought of putting anything in a freezer to kill it makes me sick  |

Not sure about how they kill pinkies but I do know that they don't use CO2 due to the fact the lungs aren't developed enough for it to be effective. I'm hoping that they don't just throw them in a freezer as that's not humane to be honest. I know that for the rats I get they have their necks snapped regardless of size pup or extra large. |

I asked this question on here before.
The general consensis was that pinkies are basically just chucked in the freezer, and adults are apparently put in CO2. (carbon dioxide) so they basically cant breath. Makes me sad to think about it... but glad i dont have to feed live, or kill them myself! |

when I was younger I was told that all mice, no matter what size were just placed in the freezer and left to die :\
