hey everyone, ive just bought an exo terra habitat kit for a corn snake which comes with most things you need, ive been reading up about additional stuff that i may need and was wondering do i need both a substrate heater and a heat wave rock or just one?

TIA :)

So glad you are not getting the heat rock Dean, yet again bad advice often given by pet shops .

The thermostat is an absolute must as far as keeping your corn safe and this thread shows just how important - http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=9675

One thing I will say is that although I know a number of forum members use the micro-climate on/off stat without a problem, I started out with one and wasnt at all happy with how low it let the temperature drop in the viv before it switched back on, which is why I changed it and went for the more expensive pulse stat. This is why it is vital that you monitor the temp in the viv with a digital thermometer and that the probes for that and the stat are properly positioned....which is not easy to achieve. Hopefully this thread may give you some idea of how to do it - http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=8402

(by the way the digital thermometer a lot of us use is this one - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230467620317#ht_2935wt_946 which is not at all expensive and comes quickly!)

according to this site that is a suitable thermostat for a corn snake vivarium so i ordered that one :)

Did you then find a good link on ebay? :)

yip the heatmat plugs into the stat. rough price ranges from £15 for mat stat to over £30 for pulse stat

(Sorry I'm intruding but thinks it'll fit in here too)

you dont need both a heat mat and rock I would recommend going with the heatmat and also a thermostat to regulate the heat mat if you don already have one.
About that thermostat: Do you guys use a thermostat connected with the heat mat or just a loose monitor? And what is the price range?

I saw a plated lizzard in some garden centre with a big burn on his nose/lip, when i asked about it they said he was meant to be like that!!! but you could see it was where he'd touched the wire surround on his heat lamp!! it was perfect fit forthe wound! i was so upset!

totally agree with the above, heatmat and stat all the way!

Our local (good) reptile shop we use won't stock them or sell heat rocks because of the injuries they cause - stay well clear!

I'm shocked at how many 'experts' in youtube videos say to use heat rocks!
herriotfan Posted - 24/09/2010 : 10:07:16
Don't get a heat rock. We've heard about peoples snakes getting horrible burns from them!

thanks :) and for the quick reply
