Heya,
I've just gone and bought new thermostats to control the heat mats in my royal and corn tanks, a bit of a big investment! They were all on a dimmer switch, so I could manually turn the heat up/down accordingly, however, like I said, I now have proper thermostats!
My question is, the sensor for the thermostats, do you place it slightly above a heat mat? or directly on top of it? As in, if you wanted 29 degrees Celsius at one end of the tank, do you put the sensor on top of the heat mat and set it to 29?

yep, thats no worries, I've got a couple of different thermometers that seem to accumulate the years!! but there you go, same with tongs and forceps actually.. brilliant, ok cheers guys! I should have happy and healthy snakes then!!

And always double check your reading with at least 1 different thermometer (digital probed/infra-red). One of my stats when it's set at 32c on the dial, the actual reading where the probe is touches 39c.
I've measured this with an independant digital thermometer and an infra-red (these also gave different readings, but that's for another thread).
So regardless of what the stat is set at, always check the temps with something else that ISN'T one of the little black thermometers or the dial ones. |

heatmats work by heating the substrate. If you have the heatmat inside the vivarium then you need the thermostat probe rubber banded together with the thermometer probe, lying horizontally on top of the heatmat. If it's a plastic or glass tank, you can put the thermostat probe on the heatmat outside the tank lying horizontally or inside on the bottom of the tank. In either case the thermometer probe needs to be lying horizontally on the bottom of the tank above the heatmat. You then set the thermostat according to the reading on the thermometer as thermostats can be a little off.

Mine is directly on the the mat and the hide is holding it down so karma cant move it |

I wasnt sure of this either when I set it up, but at that height the temp stays pretty accurate most of the time
If it was right on the mat I figure it would just take the heat of the glass not the actually air sort of thing...
