Posted - 07/09/2010 : 12:06:57 im thinking of getting some led lighting - just to help viewing, not for heating. i have seen somewhere that red lights are best as snakes cant see them and get less stressed. others say that blue is the best, others just white.
i think my lights will only be on for very short preiods, just while im viewing but is there a best colour light to get? i think i would prefer normal/white lights but i will get what ever is best for my snake.
thinking of getting these: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160474184250&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
they come in single, double, triple and also red, white or blue. |

Aquarium LEDs with suction cups are another option for me.
What about a small cable tie? Or are the wholes in the mesh too small for that?
Unfortunately the mesh is too small. I think suction cups will be the best way. Will have to make sure the cables are pushed right into the corner so Izzy can't climb on them (no doubt she'll find a way though!). |

Posted - 09/09/2010 : 11:45:55 hey, ive made my own led lights. Cost me and a friend approx £2.50 but i managed to aquire a few bits from my work place so it would of cost more. Ive got 6 leds places at the back of my viv all wired into a box which is sat at the side of my viv with a on off switch and dimmer switch. Its nice and effective and because if how my viv is made, with a breathing strip at the back, they have sat in a hole each. Well out of reach of seth until i get some vines up. |

Posted - 09/09/2010 : 10:56:53 I went with a couple of LED lights used for aquariums. The were more like spot lights than strips, so I was able to angle them where I wanted. I had a green one for the day and a blue one for night time. I got mine from Pets @ Home for about £15 each. That being said I don't think I've turned them on in a month

Hiya
Here you go, a pic of each LED strip and where the wires go. Me thinks someone has been dangling on them, I wonder who that could be.
The piece of duct tape on the back wall will be covered up by the background thats still to go in there.
Hope the pics help. |

Posted - 08/09/2010 : 16:29:37 You can get 2 push LED lights from poundland. I have one in each viv, bit too dim with the 4ft vivs I have so maybe 2 would be better. No wires, no fuss. Just un-peel the backing and stick to roof.
With cabled lights or anything with cables for that matter, you have to be careful when the cables are at the top of a viv. I have a twin light bulb thing in one of my older vivs and a cable ran between the two lights and out of the viv. The cables to start with were flush to the viv but, mine found a way to loosen it over time and they were treating it like a ceiling vine, they could hammock themselves with the wiring. No kidding, they must have stretched the wiring at least 6 inches some how. |

looking at that, a double set is perfect for a 3ft viv. thanks for posting the pics i have a few questions: where have you put the lights? they look well hidden. i was planning on putting them where the roof meets the front, so they cant be seen. what did you use to stick them up with? aquarium sealant? has the extra wire caused any problems? the bit of wire connecting the 2 led strips i mean
thanks in advance
Hiya
The lights are in the middle of the top of the viv.
The lights come with little squares of black plastic with double sided tape on one side and holes for cable ties to go through and fasten tight round the strip of lights. Does that make sense?
When we put the lights on the top we put it slighty towards the back of the viv so that the wire between the strips of lights will go out the holes that are at the top of the back of the viv (my viv is a Vivexotic one).
I'll take a pic later of how I've done it. Hope all that info helps. |

Posted - 07/09/2010 : 21:03:31 Hi
I bought the double set of white LEDs from that seller and they are fine for a 3ft viv. They are not dim at all but they are also not mega bright either, they are just right for a snakes viv.
Heres a couple of pics I had taken of the viv a while ago and the LEDs are on in those pics.
Hope they help. |

Posted - 07/09/2010 : 16:17:07 Can I just warn you these arent particularly bright from experience, to light a full viv you might want quite a few, in my old house we had these in the kitchen under the higher cupboards. Maybe you should buy a few for a start but you may need a couple more. But they are very good and extremely pretty! :) Tiffany-x |

Wouldn't it be better though to put them on a timer so the snakes get use to them coming on at set times instead of a few minutes here and there? |

Posted - 07/09/2010 : 15:40:16 the viv im getting is also 36". do you think i would be better to get this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/WHITE-TRIPLE-FLEXIBLE-LED-LIGHTING-KIT-45-LED-/190436918977?pt=UK_HomeGarden_Lighting_Lamps_Lighting_SM&hash=item2c56ecc6c1
basically 3 strips instead of two like the link in my original post. |

Posted - 07/09/2010 : 15:03:24 I've got one strip of white LED's on one side of the viv and a strip of blue ones on the other. They are controlled by a 2 way switch, so that when one set goes out, the other comes on. However, as its a 36" viv, I'm probably going to get another strip of white ones to go the other side, as it seems a bit dim with just one.[/ |
