How hot an unstatted 6x11 heatmat can get whilst working correctly?

Answers on a postcard........

Or below is just as good!

Amen to that. While I love my Corn, I'm equally keen on not becoming all crispy and dead myself. £40 is a small price to pay.

The whole idea of this thread to to enlighten people.
Most have no idea that a mat is capable of getting so hot, and as such don't use a stat, because 'its not designed to get so hot'.
Guess what, a car isn't designed to go into a tree, that is taken into account, hence seat belts and crumple zones, saftey devices, a thermostat to heat mats is a seatbelt to a car, it could potentially save your life, and that of the snakes.

I did read about how someone had to ask a petshop to look after their snake whilst they rebuilt their house, all down to a faulty heatmat!!!!

This is not an excercise to make you go unplug your stat to find out what temp it gets to, infact just the opposite, its to make people realise just how dangerous an unstatted mat can be.

Another interesting point, most heatmats will have a minimum of a 1amp fuse in the plug, if I remember correctly, it would take between 150 and 200 watts to blow that fuse, that's potentially ten times the stated power of some mats, and potentially 10 times the amount of heat produced, scary when you think normally it would be 40 or 50 degrees when drawing its 'normal' 15 watts.
Obviously the mat would never get to 400 degrees, however, that's only because by that point its melted everything around it, and shorted itself out, the real issue is, what are the flash points (the temp where things self combust (ignite)).
A wooden viv for example, a prolonged exposure to even 100 degrees would cause it to flash, then you got a burning viv, its not long before the room goes up, then its proper brown trouser time.

I am not gonna say a stat will stop that happening, however, it can drastically reduce the chance of it happening.

For the sake of 40 quid, is it not worth the peace of mind, knowing you have taken the precaution?
Even if you don't burn the house down, how long do you reckon little Dave the cornsnake is gonna last with melted plastic fumes???

I don't remember the make of mat, it was a while ago now.

The age old adage, better safe than sorry.
Also, if you are not prepared to create the safest possible living conditions for your pet, then you shouldn't be keeping it in the first place.

Holy cow! That wouldn't just kill snakey but could also kill several people in the house! Do you know what mat make it was?

This puzzle is just getting worse -
And so I'm reduced to talking in verse -
as I said -
Forgive me if I sound stressed -
But I STILL have a snake down my vest ...

D'oh!

(Snakes don't need a stat or a viv - just a handy human's body warmth!)
gmac Posted - 07/09/2010 : 22:25:30
guess, as that's what people that are using unstatted mats are doing.
BurnedAtTheStake Posted - 07/09/2010 : 22:21:12
I gathered that, but how do we tell the temp of the mat
Unless we unplug our stat??
And what is the point of that???
gmac Posted - 07/09/2010 : 22:15:49
the point is not to unplug your stat, the whole point is the stupid temps the mats can get to unstatted, and why stats are essential.
BurnedAtTheStake Posted - 07/09/2010 : 22:14:15
Dammit, if we're supposed to use a stat, why are we supposed to suddenly un stat a mat to find out what temp?????

(Sorry if I sound stressed, I have a ghost in my T shirt ...)

Got my linky somewhere of where an unstat'd mat just resting on the carpet hit temps around 70c
mikerichards Posted - 07/09/2010 : 11:47:42
I cant find it, from what i remember, the heatmat was underneath a flat bottomed plastic tub, not statted, and it hit somewhere in the region of 215 degrees C.
I have been reading posts about the same problem, even statted mats catching fire because they are not setup correctly.
One person lost half their house!

I am gonna try and find the link where it was tested, so far HannahB's nagging voice is the closest.

the 6"x11" seem particularly ferocious! 48*C is my guess
crazy JJ Posted - 07/09/2010 : 00:02:49
erm to hot me thinks :D
Sta~ple Posted - 06/09/2010 : 23:17:36
70's - 80's. I've seen some bigger ones reach high 80's but size doesn't matter so, I will say around 85.

i think someone showed they could get to over 70* but for some reason the nagging voice in my head is saying over 100*s
