The whole idea of this thread to to enlighten people.
Most have no idea that a mat is capable of getting so hot, and as such don't use a stat, because 'its not designed to get so hot'.
Guess what, a car isn't designed to go into a tree, that is taken into account, hence seat belts and crumple zones, saftey devices, a thermostat to heat mats is a seatbelt to a car, it could potentially save your life, and that of the snakes.
I did read about how someone had to ask a petshop to look after their snake whilst they rebuilt their house, all down to a faulty heatmat!!!!
This is not an excercise to make you go unplug your stat to find out what temp it gets to, infact just the opposite, its to make people realise just how dangerous an unstatted mat can be.
Another interesting point, most heatmats will have a minimum of a 1amp fuse in the plug, if I remember correctly, it would take between 150 and 200 watts to blow that fuse, that's potentially ten times the stated power of some mats, and potentially 10 times the amount of heat produced, scary when you think normally it would be 40 or 50 degrees when drawing its 'normal' 15 watts.
Obviously the mat would never get to 400 degrees, however, that's only because by that point its melted everything around it, and shorted itself out, the real issue is, what are the flash points (the temp where things self combust (ignite)).
A wooden viv for example, a prolonged exposure to even 100 degrees would cause it to flash, then you got a burning viv, its not long before the room goes up, then its proper brown trouser time.
I am not gonna say a stat will stop that happening, however, it can drastically reduce the chance of it happening.
For the sake of 40 quid, is it not worth the peace of mind, knowing you have taken the precaution?
Even if you don't burn the house down, how long do you reckon little Dave the cornsnake is gonna last with melted plastic fumes???

the point is not to unplug your stat, the whole point is the stupid temps the mats can get to unstatted, and why stats are essential. |

Dammit, if we're supposed to use a stat, why are we supposed to suddenly un stat a mat to find out what temp?????

I cant find it, from what i remember, the heatmat was underneath a flat bottomed plastic tub, not statted, and it hit somewhere in the region of 215 degrees C.
I have been reading posts about the same problem, even statted mats catching fire because they are not setup correctly.
One person lost half their house! |

70's - 80's. I've seen some bigger ones reach high 80's but size doesn't matter so, I will say around 85. |
