I have had my Corn for about a year now and hes about that old.about 2 months ago he started being really agressive. i haven't been tagged yet as i move my hand away when he coils up ready to strike. he rattles his tail as soon as i move anything in his tank and will lurch when my hand touches him... i have tried putting a pair of socks in so he gets used to my smell and i have tried leaving him til he calms but nothing seems to work. i took him to a local reptile shop and he was as good as gold that day.. i feed him on fuzzys one every 5 days (he has only just gotten onto them so i dont want to give him two) its gotten to the point where i only handle him when i have to because i cba with the agro.. i know hes a wild animal but he meant to be a ****** docile snake. he used to be fine everyday i would handle him and have him out for ages. now its hardly at all.. please help.. i dont feel like wasting my time with a snake that doesnt like me anymore..

Thats good to hear that he relaxed, but they are right about sensing fear. The first snake I held was trying to headbutt me and thats cause I was just like oh poop what the hell do I do then that makes you feel even more intimidated but once I was shown how to act confident the little snakey jus relaxed and since ive held like 10 snakes and all of them were nice and relaxed. They know when you are scared and they are so cheeky that they love to just make you even more scared. Show you arent scared and they are nice as pie. Just keep going in for it and acting confident and Im sure you will be fine and your snake will realise you won! :P Good luck. Maybe the glove will help I dont know but just keep being confident.

Well done Tom for persevering and not letting him get the better of you. I'm sure the glove will help him to recognise your smell. Just keep doing what you did and ignore any rattling and soon he will be more relaxed when you get him out. Then you will feel more able to get him out without the glove.

B.A.T.S - Not really sure about the second breeding season as I don't know much about that area of corn keeping yet. Although I think Tom's problem is that his snake knew he could scare him off. Looks like Tom's on his way to solving that one tho

i just went for it just then and scooped him up (with a glove) on and all was fine, he was a bit rattly but not moving away when he trys to strike works. even when he went mental when i got him out and he made a break for it i just held him firmly and he calmed down. i am really greatful for all your replies. also put the glove in his viv so he will get used to the smell of it? will that help.. prob got my sweat in it!

Hi, kd, how's the decorating going? you know, it's just occurred to me - Josh has posted about one of his being grumpy for no apparent reason - isn't there a second breeding season coming up? Forgive my ignorance! Could account for grumpiness?

Sometimes you have to just bite the bullet and get hold of them. If you back off when he gives you those warning signals he is learning that they scare you off. So he will do them more. He has won by making you handle him less. Try and handle him for a few minutes twice a day, apart from the 2 days after feeding, ignore any warning signs and just scoop him up. Handle him confidently as he will sense if you are unsure. If you don't feel confident then try to fake it til you do, tell yourself you are going to pick the little git up even if he does decide you are the meal of the day lol. If he does tag you it wont really hurt and you need to try and ignore that too. After a few handling sessions I'm sure he will settle back down again. It must be very disheartening to feel that it is a trial to spend time with your snake but a bit of time and effort now I'm sure will pay off. Just be patient and try to ignore his little strops.
Hope that helps as my brain is mush tonight and nothing sounds right lol
Out of interest do you feed him in the viv or out of it?

Yeah, they can go in phases. My eldest corn was terrifically fussy a month back - out all the time, in the garden, very active - now she virtually ignores me but I know in another few weeks she'll be different again.

Sorry yours is being such an awkward little git! As herriotfan says, don't give up, sometimes we just have to be patient with them.

This is just my opinion, mind, but if he's had three meals of fuzzies, you could try offering him an extra one just to see if he can take it ... at least the little devil might spend a bit of time calming down and sleeping it off? (If he will take two fuzzies then it's a good time to start feeding him every seven days.)

As I say, just my opinion, and hopefully there will be someone along soon with more experience of this problem.

All the best!

Don't give up. Keep handling and doing all the necessary jobs in the viv and eventually your snake will settle down again. It's probably just being a 'bloody minded' teenager!!!
