I have put a heat mat for the hot end and have the cold end now. But i was wondering if it's normal for him to sometimes stay on the hot end for awhile when the heat mat is on and then sometimes when it is on he moves to the cold end? I have the hot end between 29 -31 degrees. Just trying to get it to 30 max but the microclimate mat is a pain lol! Right now he has been in the cold end for awhile. Will he know to go back to the hot end himself when he require heat? Sorry i know these questions sound silly but any help would be appreciated! |

(cable ties - I've got my probe and thermometer cable tied to the cable of the heat mat, so even if the snakes move about, the probes won't ever come off the mat.....Learnt that the hard way!) |

positioning it an inch above the substrate could be done if you're using a ceramic/bulb/AHS/rep rad as these heat the air rather than what they're in contact with, but you need to position the thermometer probe where the snake is likely to be in the hot end.
so what they're saying isn't wrong as such, just wrong for specifically using a heatmat........... |

i am FULLY aware how stats work..........there are various options fof thermostat probe positioning and various random ones that pet shops come up with............and at no point has the OP mentioned this essential bit of kit........... |

Cool, i will give that a try then. Her hide is going to sit on top anyhow so that may hold it down, but i'll do the rubber band trick with the temp probe. |

some people use a hide but i find it easyer to put a rubber band round the stat and digi thorm probs together and i use a flatish stone to hold then down, my rusty likes to move around his home alot at nite and always moved it but he cant now im useing the stone. :] |

So I just leave it loose on top and cover it with a bit of substrate?? I know I cant really tape it down cause of the risk, how do people secure it? Does it need securing? |

Provided the probe is somewhere where heat is given out from the mat, then it should be ok. |

plus i don't have the sensor directly in the middle. Its about a quater in. Is there a difference with the amount of heat on certain parts of the mat? The sensor is on the black area of the mat where the heat comes from. |

Thanks i was worried incase he found it too hot. If he ever finds it too hot will he just move over to the cold end? |

When he needs to go into the warm end, he will. When he needs it a bit cooler he'll go into the cooler end.
It's actually quite hard to get the mats to go to 30c max, but dropping it a degree or 2 so it fluctuates between 27-29 will be fine. |
