Posted - 08/07/2010 : 10:55:14 I've heard 3 months - 6 months. I think this is in case of disease so you don't spread it to the rest but I wouldn't know. |

No, Its 24 hours before the mites are fertile, and will lay eggs, then the eggs hatch in about 24 hours and the cycle starts again. Hence why they are so much of a nightmare!
Nasy little sods, whats the three weeks all about then? |

Not quite tom, mites can live between 16 days and 60 odd days, depends on temps outside the viv too! 4 weeks should be enough though, at least it will give you an indicator on whether the newbie has any nasties. Mites can travel huge distances in quite a short time, so if I was you, I would treat the quarantine viv/tub for mites as a matter of course.
Quarantine is simply keeping a snake away from the rest of the collection for a period of time to reduce the liklihood of contamination.
Isn't it like 3 weeks from mating to the eggs being laid to hatching out or am I wrong?
Not ever had mites yet, so wouldn't really know.. |

Posted - 05/07/2010 : 20:01:25 You should do that with any new addition, keep it as far away from the rest of your collection as possible to prevent mites and diseases spreading, regardless of whether its imported or not.
Edit;/ 4 weeks to a month is perfect enough - the mites life cycle is 3 weeks anyway, which you play to your advantage if you get mites, and many if not all diseases which may creep in on the newb can be treated before that time elapses to prevent the others catching it.
If it is your first snake, you need to quarantine, as you have nothing else any nasties on it could infect. |

Posted - 05/07/2010 : 19:20:53 I think that 4 to 6 weeks is best just to be safe, but it depens on were the snake coming from and the conditions it was keeped in.
Hope that helps. :) |
