i have been handling whiskey from the age of a month old and he has been fine. he is now coming up for 1 year old and his temperment has changed. last night he was being handled like usual and he striked at my face and went all sketish then my partner had to grab him and put him back. then 4 hours later went to check on him and he was acting all weird so my partner got him out and he was bitten 5 times he hissed and rattled his tale. this isnt like him as he is usualy a calm snake.

any suggestions would help.

thanks

I logged in to see if anyone had mentioned this as Medusa has started behaving very oddly over the last week. He's been right up at the glass, flies out of his hide when I go in there for anything and striked at the glass when I put my hand up to it earlier today. He is usually so calm and hides away, I hope it is just the heat making them a bit more lively than normal!

Mine is about 18months and I know it sounds odd but do they go through something similar to puberty?

I'm glad I'm not alone with this!

Sounds almost like what Ash went through with Romeo Hayley. Has Whiskey gone through any length of time where he hasnt been handled as regularly as he was used to? I know that Silvesta is always funny for a bit when I have the hands-off period when he is blue coming up to a shed. Once he has shed it then takes him a couple of handling sessions to calm down and get used to me again.

It could be either of the things Devilsmistress or Sta~ple's have mentioned....

Could he be coming up for a shed? Maybe with the heat and if he is preparing for a shed he doesnt want to be touched.

You say that you were handling him as usual and then he struck at you....how long had you had him out before this happened? Was it straight away or had he maybe been out longer than usual?

You may never know the reason why but you just have to do what Ash did with Romeo....be patient and calm and keep handling him no matter how he is behaving. I know he has probably scared you but you must not let him feel that....it is a case of faking being confident until you feel confident. If he is still behaving strangely then maybe go back to handling him like when he was little, for shorter periods of time but make sure it is on a regular basis. And IF he does bite you try not to react (I know that is very easy for me to type and hard for you to do)....it wont help if you jump or jerk away from him as it will scare him more.

Ash knows what he is doing, so just trust him and be brave....you can do this and tame Whiskey back to the lovely snake he was.

I had always used the same gel, just one of mine decided she no longer liked it, Washed with just soap and she was fine used gel again she went nuts!? Or Like sta~ple said could just be to hot!

Mine have become a bit skittish due to the hot weather, my very very placid boy rattled his tail at me when I woke him up once. I think it's there way of maybe saying "It's been too hot, I'm fed up and don't want to be touched" the only other thing I can think of that he maybe ill.

hiya , i have always used the same alcahol gel sanitiser and he was fine with it apart from yesterday .
