Wanting to build a full unit with tiny vivariums for hatchlings.

Was thinking of using a small book case laid on its back, and then adding more wood to make small compartments.
Then glass or plastic lids for each one with a lock of sorts, each with little air holes in them.

Any advice or has anyone done anything similar?

Wouldn't worry too much about the magnets' effects on the snakes:

"Magnet therapy, magnetic therapy, or magnotherapy is an alternative medicine practice involving the use of static magnetic fields. Practitioners claim that subjecting certain parts of the body to magnetostatic fields produced by permanent magnets has beneficial health effects. These pseudoscientific physical and biological claims are unproven and no effects on health or healing have been established. Although hemoglobin, the blood protein that carries oxygen, is weakly diamagnetic and is repulsed by magnetic fields, the magnets used in magnetic therapy are many orders of magnitude too weak to have any measurable effect on blood flow." (quoted from Wikipedia)

Still, I wouldn't rely on magnets to keep the doors shut. There are many other easy systems you could install to keep the doors closed that wouldn't open at a good push :)

Just a silly ? on your idea, since I am thinking along the same lines, how would you heat the compartments?

When I get round to doing it I'll take photos and post a thread about how I made it..
If it works out okay haha! Im no wood work specialist..

But yeah, I was thinking of using RUBs, probably be the easiest way to do it.
Cheers for the advice, ill let you know when I start it :D

Build it yourself! And take pics :p
The way I would do it would be to measure the size of small rubs
And then build the structure around them so you can just pull them out like drawers
Probably look better and be easier to heat if you made it vertical too
Will be interesting to see however you do it. Good luck!

Yeah something like that. Just cant tell how secure the draws are if you get what I mean.
I might just build something from scratch, my dads got loads of wood lol.

and I dunno about the magnets.. be a fiddly way to do it anyway, will have to come up with a better idea haha

They'd have to be pretty strong magnets, despite how weak little hatchlings seem. Plus...and this may be a stupid consideration...don't magnets draw the iron in your blood to one place? Hence it being good for circulation to wear a magnetic bracelet - would this affect snakes, or am I being totally dumb?

You might be better off finding a lot of mini draws and doing something with them.

Oh, is this any help? http://www.overstock.com/Crafts-Sewing/Kaisercraft-Beyond-The-Page-Mini-Drawers-MDF/6552741/product.html?cid=133635

Yeah they look really good. Then i was thinking maybe little squares of glass/plastic with magnets to use as little doors.
Imagine a drinks coaster with a handle lol, that would just stick to the magnets and seal off the compartment...

Dunno where id get one of those units from though.
Cheers for that a2 x

Any more ideas anyone?

Why not look into something like...http://product.nuji.com/large/403a0363-b290-4726-a834-d8316ab0a0c8.jpg http://www.modern50.com/files/gimgs/1807_vintage-factory-blueprint-sorting-cabinet6.jpg sorting cabinets.

Don't know if you'd be able to get one second hand dirt cheap? Type of thing they'd have in post offices, printers (that use letterpresses. The book shelf is a good start though.

Good luck :)
