I've just made some hides for mine and varnished them yesterday. Not done any before.
Have turned out ok so far. Once the smell of the varnish has gone I'll pop them in their vivs.
Got to be cheaper than buying from reptile outlets!

Bluepoolshark - I shall look into the Pond Sealer, hadn't thought of anything like that!
bluepoolshark Posted - 15/06/2012 : 08:33:30
Not used salt dough but I have made lots of hides out of polystyrene for my leopard gecko and my royal, and varnished them all with no ill effects to my animals. I'm not sure I would do a water bowl in normal varnish, would probably want to use pond sealer to do this.

Molly - many thanks - concern is that using a varnished water bowl may mean it's not non-toxic. I'm just concerned that having water sat in a varnished bowl could poison my snake....

have you varnished a hide, or a water bowl?
molly360 Posted - 13/06/2012 : 13:57:14
Wow, I can help here!

You can not get the salt dough wet..... That's not to say you can't use it, if you have varnished and made it 100% water proof it should be fine.

I think this answers someone else's question...... You can varnish salt dough, in fact it's recommended, to give it longer life.
Hope this helps.

**bump** need to know whether or not to throw out the volcano water bowl i just made and painted grrrrr!
mgtrock Posted - 11/06/2012 : 12:40:39
@a2c7 I hadn't thought about that - can anyone answer if the varnish would be safe? I've just made/painted a water bowl from salt dough (it's been made as a volcano) and I was planning on using it as a water bowl but I'm now wondering if it will be non-toxic?

I love salt dough. Made loads of stuff.. jewellery and ornaments etc.
Made a few hides for the corns but they didnt last too long, dont think i sealed/varnished them properly.

If you can get a good enough varnish you could make pretty much anything you wanted for the viv, for pennies!

might give it another go at some point

These look great, I wonder if you could make something like a water bowl by hand? I guess the varnish, while water proof, may not be non toxic while in water so probably not.

I'm concerned that when my boa gets bigger she'll need a little tray sized water bowl - perhaps I could make a surround for it (get a 'stone' coloured plastic tray) to make it look mostly like a rock.

No it shouldn't if correctly sealed.

A stupid question I'm sure but do hides made like this go mouldy like pastry?
ADZUK2007 Posted - 28/08/2011 : 00:04:42
